Insider: Panthers have a leader and franchise QB in Cam Newton

I think your concern about Vick 2.0 is valid up to a point, except Cam isn't running illegal dogfighting rings and probably won't have any prison-related distractions to derail his career.  As for your other criticisms...

#1 is pretty unfair, he's gotten better enough at not staring down receivers and checking his reads that announcers point it out during games.

#2-4 are all about giving him time.  When he's had it and is allowed to be comfortable in the pocket, he does much, much better with all of these.

#5 is true, and he often overthrows.  But show me a QB who's got perfect touch on every ball.  He is accurate enough that he is still completing 58.5% of his passes, in a year when he's been under constant pressure.  That's not terrible.

#6 yup...

JOAT pointed out correctly that early in the season, when he was not allowed to move around in the pocket, his footwork showed a ton of improvement.  When injuries mounted, he got pressured more and got a lot of happy feet.  But even as a rookie he showed what he can do when he has more offensive talent around him and an OC who calls plays to his strengths. He's gotten better since then, and if we get him solid protection and one or two more reliable receivers (assuming at least one can stretch the field), he's going to look dominant out there.

Oh, and he's just 25.

Nice to see you again.  Nice rebuttal by both you and JOAT.

Cam has his quirks. Panther fan's can't look at it objectively because we're fans. Squirrel has said things that are on point but gets ridiculed and laughed at because it's Cam and as a fan should only display unwavering support. Cam just needs to improve on a few things and get some help to reach the next level. Hang in there Squirrel. I share some of your concerns.

When squirrel says something like

Can't look off defenders or read defenses.

That is dumb and he should be pointed at and laughed at. I think everyone agrees he needs consistency and he needs to work on his touch.

Thanks, I dont want Cam to fail that would be stupid as a fan of the team.  But at the same time I dont want us to give him a outrageous contract and he doesnt live up to it.  Do I think Cam can be the franchise QB with some improvements.

While I believe he is adequate when it comes to reading defenses he does struggle with looking off defenders. I noticed Cromarte, LOB and a few others reading Cam like a book. He tends to lock in on receivers and force throws. Doesn't help when you're throwing off your back foot into tight windows either. You can say that's coaching but I believe Cam can improve on that on his own. The offensive line was offering great pass protection for most of the last 6 games. Aside from the obligatory Byron pressure. As for reading defenses he's improving on it pre snap but still struggles when the ball is live. He tends to throw the ball once the receivers route has ended rather than anticipating the throw. Pressure, WR routes etc all factor in so it's not all Cam's fault but it's another area where he can improve. He's not known for picking apart defenses through the air. Just one Huddler's opinion.

Thats what troubles me. The same fans screaming we need cap room to sign help for Cam are the same ones screaming to sign him to a 150 million dollar contract. We can't have both. We need to draft well and catch a few breaks of Cam gets that kind of contract. Not to mention the other contracts pending.

As someone who stands in the end zone and watches his eyes I can confirm he does lock on to a single defender from time to time, but no more than most QB's.

Actually, a big tell for me that the ball is going to Kelvin is that Cam doesn't look at him at all until the ball is thrown. If he looks Kelvins way just after the ball is snapped, rarely does it go there.

Was the same with Smith last year.

Hey if you disagree with me prove me wrong it is that simple.

Burden of proof lies within the accuser, not the accused.

Several people here have states facts about Cam's improvement. You've only replied by saying "NAH HE STILL DOES THIS" even though no one is disagreeing that he still throws high sometimes, still stares down sometimes, etc.

Your argument is that he has regressed every year. That's false. He did regress this year, but the o-line play was abysmal to start off the year, and he was hurt. Look at QBs who were also hurt at some points this year (Philip Rivers, Joe Flacco) and you can easily say they've regressed too.

Yes Cam made mistakes this year but he is unquestionably the leader of this franchise.  The only QBs you can say are perfect in almost every aspect are Rodgers, Brady, and Peyton (who is REALLY regressing), franchise Quarterbacks don't grow on trees.

Ontop of that, you can easily say that Cam is better than Dalton and Kapernick. Look at their contracts. You seriously expect him to take less than that? Get out of here.

Cam's not perfect, but he is a franchise.

I feel very good about our team with Cam as the QB.  While he's not going to ever be a perfect QB, he's only going to get better.

The issue of money is going to be highlighted very soon.  While Dalton and Kaepernick got inflated deals which are nothing more than year to yea rental contracts, I don't really think either guy is a franchise QB.  Cam is a franchise QB.  I think he gives us the best chance to win a Super Bowl.

Cam is going to get a huge contract from the Panthers because he's the only franchise QB we have.  We're not going to go out and find another QB who can do the same things for us.  If there is another QB that we KNOW without a shadow of a doubt can give us a real upgrade from Cam, who are they?

In the modern NFL, once you find a guy who you think can win you a Super Bowl, you give them a huge contract.  That's the way this stuff works in the NFL.  Does Joe Flacco deserve his mega contract?  What about Drew Brees?  Matt Ryan?  Jay Cutler?  We can keep going on about average-ish NFL QBs making $18+ million a year.  (I consider Brees to be way above average, but is he worth the $22 million a year considering the Saints record?)

We have him through the 5th year, and we'll see what happens this year.  I'm pretty sure Gettleman has been working to make sure that he makes the right choice for the team.  I like Cam, and I wish on a shooting start the he leads us to a Super Bowl win.  I get that Cam needs a lot of work, but he's the best we have and will be able to get for a while.

C'mon Dex, no one in this thread is saying Cam is perfect. Everyone here knows he has his flaws.

But Squirrel literally came in this thread to poo on Cam and stir up poo.

"What do you expect them to say Cam sucks?"

"Over the past 4 years Cam has not improved his footwork or mechanics which have effected his accuracy.  He is getting worse every year and oh yeah he is getting injured more.  He is starting to look like Michael Vick 2."

1. stares down his receivers cant look off defenders.

2. Cant throw to where receivers are going to be"

"5. oh still not accurate with throws.  Doesnt throw where only his receiver can catch it. "

He's backpedaling and saying "I"m just criticizing him!!" to save face. It's not like he was saying "Cam still has problems he needs to work on." He's making it sound like Cam is complete trash who can't do these things, even though we all know he can and we've seen him do these things.

Yeah some people are going to blindly defend their team and their QB, that's sports. But most of these people here aren't calling out Squirrel for criticizing Cam, everyone has valid complaints, but this is straight up bashing and belittling him.
