As much as I love Jonathan Stewart's play to close the season, I'm somewhat concerned about whether he can go a full season at that pace (or close to it). I'm not talking about injuries (I'll assume that he's past them), but his actual production. I decided to go through and look at his stats from all seasons (except 2012 and 2013, where he missed significant time from injuries). This document shows the results I found - essentially, Jonathan Stewart has been consistent throughout his career in that he is mediocre (especially in YPC) throughout the first half of the season, and excellent in the second half.

 

In 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2014, Jonathan Stewart's YPC increased by at least 1.2 yards in the second half of the season as compared to the first. The biggest shift was in 2010 (a horrid offensive season, but one in which he was excellent down the stretch), where his YPC jumped a whopping 2.4 yards from the first half to the second. This isn't just translatable to him getting the ball more, either - in 2008 and 2011, his attempts either stayed the same or decreased, and yet his YPC and overall yards increased.

 

Essentially, he may have played very well the last few games, but he's very consistent in performing well to close a season. It's just a matter of if he can translate that to playing consistently well. In a way, that's the history of the Panthers organization - we're really good at the end of seasons, not so much to start them.

He's never in his career been a feature back, aside from the last month of this past season. Him as feature back and healthy = top 5 RB in league and success in rushing as a team. Remember giving Goodson carries? Stew as feature back next year could go for 1500+ easily if he plays all 16 games.

Can't remember having an oline that performed well at the beginning of the season since both of them ran for over 1000 yards.

 

This.  It seems like one of the Panthers hallmarks, such as losing winnable games, getting hot after having horrible starts to seasons, and finding stud linebackers.

Seems every year Stew always has some nagging injury going into the start of the season too IIRC, even if he doesn't miss the game, he's still gimped... and that usually carries on into subsequent games during the season.

 

I can't remember the last time this dude made it through or fully participated in training camp.  He's probably logged more miles on that air bike than Lance Armstrong has on his Trek.

      The difference is about how much player input is allowed and encouraged in the decision making process. Top down teams tend to dictate to players how everything is handled. Disagreements are handled by the coach and players are expected to do what they are told regardless of what they think or feel.  Players are perceived as commodities to be used until we find better. In player led teams player input is encouraged and valued. Players and especially leaders are expected to settle their own disagreements and be accountable to the team but mostly to each other. Players are family to be appreciated and supported in their growth. Is the reality of football the same in both? Yeah there are limited positions, football is a business and winning is the bottom line. Coaches get final say and run the program because that is their job. But in player led teams they feel valued, appreciated, part of a larger whole. Most people who have worked at multiple jobs know exactly what I am talking about. When players try to run the show and don't value  coach input that isn't a player led team, that is a circus which we surely are familiar with in our past.

      Seems to be the consensus from the talking heads. I really wish we had double dipped at center in the 2nd round. Sion will never play in the league.
