RIP Dean Smith

Not the greatest...not even close. K, Knight, and Wooden are all easily better.

Maybe if you just look at individual resumes you can make that argument.

But once you look at it in a broader sense much harder to make that argument

If you take into account his push for social change and equality, things he did off the court that are both well known and not so well known.

When you look at his innovation and how he actually changed the game and how it was played.

When you take into account his relationship with his players far, far after they left UNC

And when you look at his coaching trees.

If you take onto account his genuine humility and humbleness

There is no one better than Dean, and it isn't just because of his on court accomplishments.

Just my 2 cents but I am a UNC fan and biased

Nice bias post. I am a State grad and fan. Was a student in late 80s and early 90 and absolutely hated. Smith as a coach. . Still though, Will be remembered as a revered coach and great leader of men. Smith is an iconic figure who essentially created the college BBall landscape we currently have. Great coach but at least 10 X better person. RIP Dean.

    • He makes a good point about Wallace.  In fairness to Wallace it is hard to play your position as freely as you need to when your defensive line is getting pushed around like ragdolls.  One of the greatest attributes a defensive line has is sucking up blocks, freeing up your linebackers.  Our defensive line couldn't suck up a lollipop more or less blocks.  I think Evans, Sanders and Tremble are going to be a really nice TE group.  I can see all three getting time on the field.  If Sanders can improve as a blocker teams won't be so inclined to believe it is a pass play whenever Sanders is on the field.  Ryan Fitzgerald, I think was an awesome pick-up. Hopefully he can fill our kicker void. Luke Kandra many turn out to be our next Norwell.  Everything I have heard about him says he's a beast.  He needs some refinement, but the good news is he's got Hunt and Lewis (arguably the best guard tandem in the league) to learn from.
    • Great teams build through the draft and have several young players that start that are on rookie contracts. It's important to hit on players in rounds 4 thru 7.  These should be future starters and solid depth.  When you hit on most of your picks you free up a lot of cap space for those one- or two-year players to fill spots you are thin at. No GM is going to perfect on all their picks.  You're going to whiff every once in a while.  That was Hurney problem.  He'd nail the first pick but after that it was reach after reach and we couldn't get any depth on this team. I'm excited about Morgan as our GM and hopefully he'll be around a long time.  It will be even better if Canales can continue to grow as a head coach, both in the development of young players and play calling. I remember last season after Young came back in the lineup and started to perform well.  We saw different plays I had only seen other teams use.   If Canales's play design and play calling continue to grow. Morgan and Canales will be linked together for a long time.  It would be nice to see a Coach and GM together for a decade or two. Go Panthers
    • They also came out for the encore and the singers were dressed in canes jerseys. Pretty fuging cool.
