Don't see us getting Torrey smith

http://www.baltimorebeatdown.com/2015/2/8/8002231/torrey-smith-stats-that-will-blow-your-mind pretty interesting article on his "down year" wouldn't say I agree with everything but still an interesting read

When people start throwing obscure stats at you--hand picked at that--it makes you question their position. For example, one of the stats questioned the quality of the defense in relation to the stats of the WR.  Really?  What about the quality of the QB? The weather?  The effect of play action on the LBs and S?  The OL?

Thanks for sharing this--it is an interesting perspective I am sure his agent will present to the Ravens (unless he is the one who presented them to the writer).

Smith would be a good fit here.  I think he wants back into Baltimore.  I like the fact that he has upside still and he is a high-character guy.  The price tag is the issue.

Don't see any evidence of this offer from the Ravens.

Smith would be the best free agent fit at wide receiver that this team has had the opportunity to sign in the last 4 years.

Compare him to Maclin, who everyone is touting as a number 1 $8-10m receiver:

They're the same height and Smith is marginally faster.

Over their first four years Smith has more yards and 4 more touchdowns.

Smith has shown he's a better deep ball threat and I think he's a better sideline receiver.

Maclin has more YAC in Chip Kelly's offence.

Smith has been catching Flacco passes for the last 4 years, and I think Flacco has the most similar arm to Cam's in the NFL at the moment.

All of this points to him being a perfect fit opposite KB for us, and I think he's definitely worth the $6-8m he'd likely be offered.

Agreed with everything here. You want to be big time in this league you have to be willing to pay up.

Lol at everyone who has watched fumble through losing season after losing season and is still looking for ways to count out pennies to the worst possible players each year

This forum cracks me up with how we think we can get everyone cheap.

Smith would instantly fit in here and fill what has been a big need for a while.  He's the perfect compliment to Butterfinger Benjamin.   Smith/KB/Olsen would be a big improvement.  I'd still draft a WR, maybe in the first depending on BPA or if there isn't a good tackle there.  Then you'd have Smith/KB/draft pick/Philly out there combined with maybe Ginn as a 4th/5th receiver if he comes back.   I really feel like our offense is what is holding us back, and this would help to getting over the hill into a real offensive threat (minus Shula sadly).

Where are people getting 5/yr from? 35/5=7

Where are people getting 35 over 5yrs from??? This is apparently what the Ravens offered him LAST year, it doesn't sound like that's what they can offer him this year:

I think he's worth every penny of 6.5 to us, and if 7 is enough to pick him up, then he's worth it.

I agree with your first and last comments--the others are simply one of many ways we can successfully address the issue.  I like the idea.

However, when I read your first sentence, I thought, "That has been the mentality around here," because we know that free agency is a bidding war for desperate teams who have huge holes now and lack the time to develop talent.  It is not a way to build a team, in my opinion, unless you are looking for the one piece that puts you over the top.  Since we need several positions, and since the WRs we need are going to cost in the $7m+ range (or we could bring in more of what we have), I would simply look to the draft again.  I think Gettlemen might do it because the NFL had a ton of successful WR rookies last year and the draft is loaded at WR again.  So we can pay $1-2 million for a solid WR in the draft and maybe bring in a Ginn on the cheap--or a KR/PR/WR later in the draft.

I know that makes us very young, but if you draft smart, somewhat polished WRs, you can narrow the gap quickly.  Use your resources on positions not deep in the draft, like CB.

I would not mind Smith, but a top 10 WR in the draft and a stud CB in free agency would be a better allocation of resources, in my opinion.

You just got me to thinking...

I actually think our two biggest holes in experience and talent are WR and OT. We have 2 good cornerbacks and serviceable safeties in the back field. We do not have a serviceable LT and we only have 1 good WR.

That's why I'd spend the bulk of the $15 cap space on a WR and LT, $5-7m on each should get good, experienced players in both of these positions and allow us to reinforce CB, S, OLB and DE, where we currently have serviceable/good players and experience.

Do not want a WR in free agency. Why break the bank when the WR class is so deep again? The uncertainty in the draft is usually at the tackle positions, so I'd rather pursue a tackle in free agency as well as draft one.

I'm hoping we look for a solid CB, safety and a LT in free agency.

Draft a WR or two early, and a RT and BPA later on.
