The football fan always forgets the $$$.

This I a job for these guys. They have a handful of yrs to make as much as possible.

If I was Cam I'd tell Getts, I'd want to be the highest paid guy.

If I were Getts I'd push a Kapernick deal.

Then they debate.

Then a deal is signed.

This hand wringing aboUT something you all have zero control over is pointless.

Xoxo

I agree with the formula. I just want more than two 'stars'.

I want a star left tackle and a solid pass rusher (plus at least decent players along both sides of the line), a receiver teams have to respect, at least one decent cover corner, a reliable tight end, a running back who can get the tough yards., a hard hitting safety, and maybe a few other things if I think about it longer.

Yeah, that's asking a lot, but it has been done, and by more than one team.

Hey I want to my urine to turn things into gold, but none of us is pooping on a gold throne Tonight

I'd argue a couple of those players are already here or can be found sooner rather than later.

Which is one thing I like about our current roster. I do feel we have at least some of those elements already.

Keeping them, while filling in the spots we don't have though, and paying big contracts to the established stars? That's a balancing act a high wire artist would balk at.

Mind you, it's at least a decent problem to have. Better than past offseasons have seen.

We have all of that now except for the left tackle and the hard hitting safety

I think cam just needs to throw his number out there. how much do you want to make over the next 10 years... 160 million.? done. 16 a year..you get hurt/can't play or your performance falls off , your cut.. sign the line.

it doesn't have to be that complicated. we've paid guys more for less

1. The cap is jumping, and will continue to jump. Say by 2020, it very well could be up 15-20 million (if not more) than what it is now.

2. EVERY franchise QB in the league from here out, will be making 20 million plus. They used to make a million, then someone out did someone and it became 5, then 7, then 10...you get the picture. Same thing is playing out here. 5 years from now, QBs going rates very well may be 25-30, not 20-25.

3. Cam is getting paid, and frankly if he doesn't, we're fuged (for a few years at least). Unless you're cool with hitting the jackpot again in the draft (not likely), or signing a Jay Cutler type guy for 18-20 million instead of Cam at 23-25. I'm not. Pay the man.

You do realize that the "salary cap will increase big in the next few years" is exactly the philosophy that Hurney used and that has bitten us in the ass now for years.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.
    • Hiring Shula & his Cam save us playbook.
    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
