Giants to Release DE Kiwanuka

The New York Giants have informed defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka that he will be released, reports NFL Network's Kim Jones.

Kiwanuka, who was one of only three remaining holdovers from the Super Bowl XLII team (Eli ManningZak DeOssie), has long been considered a likely salary cap casualty this offseason. He was owed a base salary of $4.775 million, but with the cap holdover would have actually counted for $7.45 million against the cap. And having already "asked" him to take a pay cut a season ago — something he didn't respond well to — that was never a likely option.

Another DE to hit the market.  Could be a nice veteran option if we can get him for decent price.  That's a BIG IF though...

His best years are behind him, but he could be a decent enough option, similar in the mold of Colin Cole/Dwan Edwards as an aging DL that can still be productive.

The Giants connection is present as well, so IF the price is right, could be an option.

CJ, Ealy, Kiwanuka, Draft pick, Addison, Horton. Might even allow the team to use Addison as a special teams ace, which IIRC, DeHaven said he wanted.

I was pondering that.

When Rivera started coaching here, we wound up pulling a decent number of ex-Chargers along for the ride (at least temporarily).  But since Gettleman's been here, I can only remember two ex-Giants being brought in; Blackburn (who's still here for the moment) and Hixon (who's retired).

There was the whole Nicks thing, of course, but that didn't pan out.

Am I forgetting anyone?

Not that Kiwa is the answer, but we can do better than Wes Horton at DE depth

Big Frank has been great when on the field. If he can pull it together then I think our depth at DE is actually okay. We really need Ealy to have a big year next year.

    • I think Bryce balls out again and the Panthers win in a close one.  Panthers will have a defender shadow CMC the whole game so I expect he'll be contained to under 100 yards.
    • yeah, Steve was basically like on any actual topic that approached his flaws/problems.....89 went with the long winded, try to sound like a wise man strategy of just basically just pleading the 5th (and sprinkling in the idea that others could of been wrong or wrong too).   also, in terms of the assaults and stuff like that....it feels like old 89, I feel has sort of forgotten his well-documented confessions and apologies about that aspect and era of his and was trying to re-write his story/image in hindsight.   And in all honesty, it seemed like a PR move on the twitter/cheating stuff also attempting to play himself as not the bad guy some think with the intentional vague suggestions. and the Pivot and all these athlete moves to basically take the reigns and power from traditional outlets exposes they have just as bad as flaws if not more often than the traditional media folks.  I mean I do like the free form long talk when dudes are telling stories but all this stuff is largely flawed and controlled PR often.
    • Sadly, I agree and I’m a huge Melo fan. Might be time to ship him out. Don’t want to make the same mistakes the Pels did. They should’ve gotten rid of Zion two years ago.
