League wide veteran purge

I would really like to see how many of these teams are showing their hand draft hand. A lot of these guys seem to be making room for what they're planning to address in the draft. I know that's not rocket science... but I just haven't seen it like this before.

Still an awful lot of free agency to come before the draft ever gets here.

I do vaguely remember looking at the cap figures and thinking there sure were an awful lot of teams low on cap room.

That could have a lot to do with it.

I wonder if we are seeing a wave of releases in order for players to properly prepare for that veteran combine??

Possible, though I think that's mostly for guys who are largely unknown or haven't been in the spotlight for a while.

I could be wrong on that, though.

Right! They are sitting at 20+ mil over right now. That is gonna be one hell of a purge. Unless they get stupid and restructure everyone. Those restructures only kick the can a little further down the road.

Only Congress could be that stupid. Kick the can, borrow more money and increase the debt ceiling. Enough politics, I would love for the Saints to destroy their franchise and lately I would not be surprised if they screw up even more for the sake of today to sacrifice tomorrow.

It does seem like a lot of big names are either on the block, bubble or already been cut.

Seeing two very young teams win Super Bowls, and the NFL is a copycat league, I expect to see more age/money cut while youth is scooped up.  For teams with a strong core, this is good for them moving forward.  For teams that blew it in FA the past couple of years and fought too hard to keep guys over 27, it's going to be a rough time moving forward.

Got to draft smart!  Work out those UDFAs, and get your FAs cheap.  It's an interesting trend for now.

In the Saints situation, I actually think its a decent move.  Once Brees is done the Saints are going to need to rebuild from scratch anyway.  No point in signing big name FAs when you have the talent deficiency brees will leave behind.

    • if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying
    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
