Let's talk Kony Ealy

look, life is more run when you're loaded at DE.  I hope we draft one in the first

2 rounds.  I think we can Preston from Miss St in Round 2.

I like Preston Smith as well.  I think he has a prototypical 4-3 end body and will transition well to the NFL.

Like the Hunter kid from LSU, Smith will likely be WAY gone by the time the bottom of the 2nd rolls around. Hunter and Smith are both knocking on the door of being FIRST round prospects. The likelihood of either sitting their in the bottom of the 2nd round is close to nil.

Agree on smith, but not hunter

I believe that Ealy is the future at DE for the Panthers. We already have 5 defensive ends so drafting a defensive end would probably mean we will have to cut or trade someone. I don't see us cutting Addison or Horton and I don't see any trade value for Alexander but I also don't see us cutting him. Maybe we don't draft a DE, maybe Gettleman likes what we already have.

Good backups get cut all the time by teams with depth at those positions. You don't pass on future starters because you're comfortable with your depth.

This year's draft class is being talked about as possibly being one of the best classes for edge rushers like ever.

maybe for the 3-4 teams. Not a lot of explosive 4-3 ends. Aside from Preston Smith, the UCLA kid (and obviously Fowler who we have no shot at drafting) there's not a one that I think would be an upgrade to us with the scheme we run. Beasley, Ray, Harrold, the Nebraska kid, all can't play on the line.

I know we have guys already but I don't believe anyone we have currently including Ealy in only his second year is capable of being that every down player we need. Not only were Hardy and CJ capable of getting 10+ sacks they also both had a ridiculous amount of pressure which is just as important as the sacks themselves.

Now let's say we do draft another DE chances are he won't be an every down player right off the bat. Do we incorporate more blitzes in our defense? With all the talk about adding speed we could see a few pieces added to the Lb core/Dbs that can get to the passer. McDermott used to blitz a lot more with Philly than he did coming here. I know we would occasionally send 5 or 6 the last two years but typically it was a 4 man rush that we relied on to get to the Qb. Do you guys think anything changes? Should we expect more blitzes?
