The Panthers absolutely need to give Jake Long an offer

Every player in the NFL has question marks, honestly. It's very rare that you're like "Ah, finally, the perfect player."

I know most people will bring up Luke but I happen to know he enjoys the type of porn with men "drowning" anime figurines.

adding this to my queue of things to google after i get off work tonight

It is low risk if we can get him cheap.

I doubt we could get him cheap though.

Exactly.

Why do so many people think that we can sign guys on cheap deals and with little to no guaranteed money.

Living in a fantasy land must be a hell of a ride for many on this board.

My biggest thing about this is, we trusted Gettlemen last year.  Where did that get us?  We were stuck with a wasted 13 million dollars in cap space, and two OTs that couldn't block traffic.  This year our OT situation hasn't improve much.  What I really fear is having Olsen in on max protection, and we never using his skills to it's max potential.  We got lucky last year as far as making it to the playoffs.  So my thing is let's cut the games and bring in a proven OT.  Yeah, he's been injured, but we are desperate if you ask me.

It got us a division championship, playoffs, and playoff win.

It's March 11. Less than 24 hours into free agency.  9 out of 10 people here would have said we wouldn't make a first wave signing. We knew we wouldn't and discussed it for at least a month. Now we have people flipping out about it.

What about being a fan of a team caused people to turn off their brain? Are we collectively this stupid in other areas of our lives or just in terms of our teams?

Of course I'm not the one to complain about those things, but we have to admit we were lucky.  I imagine having the same record next year won't amount to the same results.  We were a much better team with Gross anchoring the left side.

True.  Though the Rams have been reported of being interested in bringing Long back under a lesser deal.  So if we were looking at him, I'd at least put in a call.

The best rookie class in team history. a second straight division championship for the first time ever in the NFC South, a trip to the playoffs and our first playoff win in ten years, plus slowly improving salary cap space and solid footing for the future.

Any questions?

People forget just how good Jake Long is when he's healthy. He was a four-time Pro Bowler and 2x All-Pro with Miami. By all means give him an offer, just not anything ridiculous and with only a bit of guaranteed money. If he bites, great.

I don't dispute that, but there's no question he failed in terms of free agency last year.  He shouldn't have franchised Hardy, knowing full well he wouldn't be able to bring him back long term.  He should have signed an OT, particularly my guy Veldheer, but instead thought Bell of all people would be a stud essentially.  Of course he then went out and signed Harper and DeCoud, though I admit I thought DeCoud would be reliable.

This year I'm giving him a little more leeway, but I don't like the Oher signing.  It reeks of "depending on Bell to be something" all over again.  Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Gettlemen brought Bell back, and was satisfied with that concerning the OT spots.  I trust him concerning drafting, but I'm a bit concerned with his free agency skills right now.

I agree with you.  Gettleman has been killing the draft but I think he has a bit to learn as far as free agency.  As long as we see improvement I'm confident.  We just can't expect to limp into the playoffs every year in a bad division either.

The Hardy move was the one big mistake that he made last year.  That move had a domino effect that effectively kept us from going after better players.

At the time though, it made sense.  And there was no way to predict what would happen.

As to Oher, he's here largely on the word of his OL Coach.  On that front, I'm cautious but hopeful (which is largely how I'd feel if we signed Jake Long; only more so on the 'cautious' side due to his injury history).

And I'd add that while free agency last year might not have looked so hot. free agency the year before looked pretty good.  So I'd shy away from any suggestion that we know how good or bad he can be on that front yet.

Who thinks we haven't already talked to Long's agent to discuss bringing him in?  If we dont pull the trigger you can assume we have questions or feel he is not a good fit or not worth what they are asking.

Players who are getting contracts this week are getting what they want and likely getting the better end of the deal.  As time goes by, the agents start feeling the heat and are more likely to negotiate. Those are the guys we want and will pursue.

BTW, anyone have Remmers on their radar last year?  Who thought that would work out like it did,  Lets see what Gettleman can do with what is out there before we decide we have to have the big names and high priced guys.

Long is surely very risky and might be a one year rental or less if he gets hurt again.  We need someone who can anchor the left side for some time.  And that likely will be a draft pick.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports the Rams are thinking they "may get free agent RT Joe Barksdale on the rebound."
Barksdale is our top free-agent tackle left, but beat writer Jim Thomas believes Barksdale could be "overestimating his market value." We're not sure how Jermey Parnell can get a $32 million deal, yet Barksdale has been greeted with crickets. He's arguably been the Rams' best lineman the past two years. Mar 11 - 9:31 AM

    • Sweet jebus this is idiotic Yes, overall team success in this league, you need a good QB, but beyond just that painfully obvious fact, let's get into the rest of the stupid in there......... First things first, you say.. "if we need a good QB for him to have success, then why are you drafting that player with the #1 pick" Show me one time I've ever said we would need a good QB for T-Mac himself to have success... you can't, because I never have.  I think you're referring to the "he's bad enough that we then have a Top 5 pick to target a QB" part of my post, which is very clearly talking about said QB, not T-Mac.  The other way to interpret that is just overall team success, which again, wouldn't be anything about T-Mac or his ability to impact the offense or overall team wins and losses. I'm quite sure I could do this with a number of teams over the years, but I don't want to spend the time to do multiple, so I'll keep it to just the 2023 Vikings right now since you wanted to use Jefferson as your example....... The Vikings went 3-6 after Cousins went down last year.  And two of those wins came before Jefferson even came back from his own injury, they were 1-4 in the final 5 weeks after Jefferson came back. In those 5 games, Jefferson had 31 catches, 503 yards, and 2 TDs Having the WR you specifically called out didn't help them go better than 1-4 with a bad QB, even though he still put up a great stat line for that time period either.  It also didn't make that QB good enough to where they then went out and brought in TWO new QB's this year to replace Doubs and Mullens who started down the stretch for them last year. And that's with 4th year Jefferson, not a rookie that T-Mac would be If you expect a WR getting drafted #1 overall to be the player to turn a franchise as bad as we are around in 1 season, make whatever QB we're able to put in there be successful, and lead us to a solid season, then you are literally insane. We are AWFUL, we have a few young guys who could turn into great players, but we are so far from being a good team, that there isn't any player we could draft next year that is going to change that in 2025.
    • They might be ass but it’s the professional level like NFL!! I will take a win no matter what!! Still not over
    • So you are just going by what these analysts are saying. So if come draft time they say Ward/Sanders is worth pick 1 you should be good. The future draft QB class is always going to be projected as the next great thing until these young players start playing the game and scouts can see some flaws. Think of all of the high school phenoms that didn’t look as good in college.  If Manning does turn out to be the next great prospect only one team gets to draft him. Odds are someone else could get the top pick, especially if go all in on building a supporting roster. I’m never going to be a just wait another year guy, because there are so many variables. If our staff loves Ward/Sanders then we should just draft them with our pick. It’s as simple as that. I also might go with Hunter over TMac as WR1 in this class.  The roster has the OL to help a young QB, young weapons in Coker, XL, and JT to grow with a QB, and a RB who can catch in Brooks as a safety net for a young QB. Sign a vet WR, extend BC and our offense would be set outside of depth. Let our young offensive core go through their growing pains while we iron out the defense. It’s definitely a path forward.
