Bene got burned deep by Seattle's receiver in the playoffs (I believe it was Kearse) because he didn't have the speed to keep up with him. He played like an elite nickel corner last year. He was solid on the outside (not nearly as good as Norman was) but not as good as he was at nickel. I think this signing is just to allow us to put Bene in the slot when we're in nickel packages and have Ball line up outside across from Norman. Would be an upgrade from Norman, Bene outside, and Colin Jones in the slot. I anticipate Norman and Bene will be the guys out there when we've got 3 backers.

Not sure what else Bene could do. Could have been PI on either side, but just a great and/or lucky one handed catch and play.

Free agent corner Alan Ball is scheduled to visit the Panthers on Thursday afternoon, according to a league source.

There were media reports Thursday that Ball had already signed with Carolina, but there is not an agreement yet, according to two league sources.

If things go well, Ball could be a Panther by the end of Thursday.

Ball, 29, started all 22 games he's played for Jacksonville over the past two seasons, and has 44 starts in 93 games over his eight-year career.

Ball, 6-2 and 197 pounds, started seven games for the Jaguars last season before sustaining a season-ending biceps injury.

Personally, I like this signing..  I think that all players get hungry when they are in competition.  In my opinion, the only starter for sure we have at corner is Norman.  Let Bene and Ball fight it out.  I still believe both are one the team which is nothing but positive.  You all saying it was a trash signing only say this because his name isn't Revis.  Get for real.

Am I the only person who really liked what Colin Jones had to offer at the nickel?

Jones was perfect to have in there vs. the run, he absolutely blew up screens, and is a good blitz option.  You can't help but like that.  I don't care for him in coverage though.

Honestly Norman is better when he was allowed to press and get physical with the WR...

 

Maybe we will try to play more up on the receivers...which would make my day because I'm so fuging tired of the patented Rivera 15 yard cushion.

Two good press guys could mean just that.  When we have a good pass rush, it's stopped by those damn timing routes anyway.  If you have good press corners, it works hand-in-hand with the pass rush, and helps eliminate dink and dunk offenses... which has given us a lot of trouble the past couple of years.  Main problem is... you gotta have safeties that can help with the deep ball when pressing.  Otherwise, it's all for naught.

Bene was in perfect coverage on that play.

Well until Kearse fully extended his arm and created space.

      That Lawrence draft was suppose to be great. He is the only QB from the 1st still with his team before the rookie contracts are even over.  I definitely wouldn’t want Bo Nix, Penix has injury flags and is old, Daniels didn’t look great into year 5, JJ wasn’t asked to do much in that offense. These guys are far from being flawless prospects. Let’s see how they turn out.
