Running backs other than Gurley

Captain Morgan

Recommended Posts

We know we're drafting a running back.  If we don't get Gurley, who are the other targets?

these are the ones we know we've met with

The Dakota kids and Hill will be late rounders.  Allen, Coleman and Johnson are mid-rounders.

RB
Zach Zenner, South Dakota State (Shrine Game)
John Crocket, North Dakota State (Shrine Game & Pro Day)
Javorius "Buck" Allen, University of Southern California (On Campus)
Telvin Coleman, Indiana University (Private)
Todd Gurley, Georgia (On Campus)
Keyshawn Hill, Sam Houston State (Pro Day)
Duke Johnson, University of Miami (Combine)

Who fits our system best?

and have we not met with Melvin Gordon, Jay Ajayi, Abdullah and the Alabama kid, all of whom have
2 or 3rd day potential?

Johnson's stick will rise significantly after tomorrow's pro day. They'll be talking about him for days and how under rated and under valued he is going into the draft. He an do it all and will likely be the best back in the class imo

Tone down the homer just a lil bit friend

Coleman is a good running back in a zone system. If you watch him run he runs very straight up and down and does not really run behind his pads at all.  He is fast and makes good cuts and seems to have good vision, it's hard to tell all the runs out of the spread if its good vision or just no one in the box anymore.

Honestly, if Gurley does not fall to 25, I would wait until the 3rd day to pick up a back.  A guy like Cameron Artis-Payne or, my personal favorite, Kalros Williams will probably be around in the 4th and maybe the 5th round.  Payne because he will be 25 before he ever plays in the NFL and Williams because he has only 2 years of playing experience at rb.

I don't think their is much of a drop off in talent from a guy like Ajayi or Duke Johnson to Payne or Karlos Williams.

I like Tevin Coleman a lot. puts immediate pressure on 2nd and 3rd level of defense after he crosses LOS. his speed is a weapon. he definitely fits the stated desire by Gettleman and Rivera to put more speed on the field. just the kind of thing that would make the read option more of a headache for defenses.

    • Link to article Seven players mentioned are... ILB Mark Robinson (PIT) - 2022 seventh round pick that was a core special teams player and was productive in the final preseason game vs. CAR (3 TKLs, 1 FF, 1 FR). Undersized at 5'11" 235 lbs.  CB O'Donnell Fortune (NYG) - UDFA rookie out of South Carolina (and a Sumter native). 6'1", 185lbs frame fits the Panthers' preference for long and lanky CBs. Panthers' evaluators got a lot of time with him during the Shrine Bowl, his pro day, and the combine. CB Damarri Mathis (DEN) - 2022 fourth-round pick that played for Evero his rookie season at 5'11" 195lbs both inside and outside. Did well under Evero (16 games, 11 starts, 65 TKLs, 7 PBUs) but slid down the depth chart after he left. Started just seven of 27 games the last two seasons. DB Dean Clark (NYJ) - Fresno State UDFA with good size (6'1" 205lbs) and preseason production (5 TKLs, 1 INT, 2 PBUs) that can also play special teams. The Panthers have claimed a player from the Jets in each of the past two seasons (having also played the Jets both times in preseason though). OLB Brennan Jackson (LAR) - 2024 fifth-rounder that notched three sacks in the preseason. Played special teams and rotated in on defense that could potentially be an upgrade from DJ Johnson. DB Beau Brade (BAL) - 2024 UDFA that appeared in 11 games and played 70% of the special teams snaps. Has the size (6'0" 209lbs) that the team covets at safety. K Ben Sauls (PIT) - 24yrs old and went four-for-four against Carolina in preseason. Made 21 of 24 FGs during his final college season at Pitt.
