If Randy Gregory is available at # 25 ....

A few months ago, Nebraska pass rusher Randy Gregory looked like a sure thing to be a high first-round pick. But now there’s increasing talk around the league that Gregory will still be available in the late first round.

Mike Mayock of NFL Network said today that he has talked to personnel people on several teams picking in the late first round who now believe Gregory could be available when they pick. As a result, those teams are having internal conversations in which the personnel people are talking to the owners about whether Gregory — who failed a marijuana test at the Combine — is the kind of person they want representing their franchise.

Curious to see how many of you think the Panthers would pull the trigger on Gregory at #25.  

 

They did their "due diligence", which notes interest (at least).

My first reaction was no also but Gettleman spending time with him means we are one of the teams snooping around.  When the failed test came out it was said Gregory may drop from top ten to around 12-15 but not many thought he would drop all the way to the end of the round.

If we were the Raiders, Jags, or Cowboys I'd say bah too. But if there is one team in the NFL with a slew of high character guys who could mold this young man it would be us. TD, Peanut, Luke, Harper, Star, Ginn, etc. Still a tough call though.

Dude would be an awesome linebacker. He's lean, fast, instinctive and physical. He can blitz, tackle and cover RBs and TEs in 1 on 1 coverage. You can drop him into coverage when blitzing safeties. He's a kind of guy who can make defense very unpredictable.

Here is the list of sack leaders in 2014:

You have to get all the way down to #41 to find a player who is lighter than 250# and that's Seattle's Bruce Irvin who is listed at 248#.

 

The leader under 230#?  Tennessee FS Michael Griffin who had 3 sacks.

 

Virtually everyone in the NFL who is putting up decent sack numbers is 250+.

We did indeed spend time with him, but what we don't know is whether that time resulted in a positive or negative impression/

 

This and from I've read generally teams have left with a negative impression after meeting with him. There was a quote from a month or so ago from an anonymous exec that "he has an excuse for everything," which I don't feel like is an attitude that would sit well with our guys.

He's not going to be DE in NFL.

      I'm probably one of those posters, but I make those posts because there are too many things going on that don't make sense. For instance, how does a RB that does something that hasn't been done in 14 years immediately get reverted back to 2nd string, and it takes a leadership council to make him the starter when he's averaging 3x the YPC? Your average fan shouldn't be screaming that for 2 weeks before the coach sees it. And that's one of many.  What you're seeing is frustration that we could be better, that we should be better, if our owner, FO, and coaches could do things that are so painfully obvious to even the most basic fan

      I think we're all struggling with what things are right now and what they have been. It's like getting ready to have bandages removed after a long period of injury. The healing, the new growth, they aren't going to be pretty, there's going to be some ongoing issues for a while at best and there's every chance that we're going to have to go back into the bandage situation all over again. And that sucks. But it's also a place where maybe, just maybe, the recovery is going to finally start happening. The bad days will be getting behind us.  It's not going to happen this year, but I believe from what I see that this year is showing that improvement. We focus on the QB because that's what all the pundits focus on, because it's the flashiest and most heralded position on the field. No one wants to put out a tweet about how a center is holding down their job and anchoring a line. They rarely celebrate that blocking tight end or special teams gunner. That fourth CB on the depth chart? Not a mention. And yet, those guys are the kind that we've been building here, we're building the lunch pail guys AND finding some future stars.  Is Bryce one of them? Might be a cornerstone of the team in the future as the second QB, might somehow just show out to end the season. Might flame out like many expect. But if that uncertainty is all we concentrate on, we're just going to miserably look at this team and maybe miss out on some solid green shoots that are finally beginning to poke through into the sunlight.
