Slow 40s and the Panthers

Recommended Posts

Shaq, ran slow forty and had a disappointing combine.

Funch, ran a slow forty at the combine but did better at his pro day.

KB, ran a slow forty at the combine but ran as fast as 4.41 in private workouts. Had mentioned his combine time 'helped him fall to the Panthers'.

Is it just a coincidence that these guys were worked out extensively by the Panthers, ran slower than expected at the combine, and then picked by the Panthers?

They all can run sub 4.5 in the 40.

So, yes they all did considerably worse at the combine, and both Shaq and KB chose not to run the 40 at their pro days even though they were harassed by scouts to run it. The Panthers never made an issue of any of them refusing to work with scouts or running drills outside the combine like several other teams did, which led to them dropping from the mid 1st round. All 3 of the them. KB got called out by at least one scout publicly. And Shaq received negative scouting reports after his refusals.

Why they chose to do this? We may never know.

Gettleman addressed this in detail during the panthers.com article. He said he learned early in his career to value game speed over 40 times.

Learning to properly sprint from a runners stance has very little to do with playing football.

Joe Adams ran a slow 40 too. The difference is USDA BEEF.

I watched some youtube videos of Funchess (im an expert I know). He's more explosive than Kelvin. He jumps higher, has sudden movement, and agility. He's a threat after the catch and his upper body is stacked. Just watching him play in college reminds me of Terrel Owens.

He measures bigger than TO but he has the same bull in a china shop look when he runs into the secondary.

When we picked him I was mad because I really wanted a Lineman but I get it. And I'm starting to like it.

This is why the 40 yard dash time is almost pointless. They all line up in a track position and to run as fast as they can in a straight line. When these guys are wearing full pads and have a defender in front of them, the 40 time at the combine becomes nothing more than a novelty to fans.

What really matters is how much separation they can create, how skilled they are at route running, playbook comprehension, ability to jump and use of hands,
