Thomas Davis #38 in PFF Top 101 Players

Good to see him get some recognition for his play on the field.

38. Thomas Davis, LB, Carolina Panthers (52nd)

The medical marvel that is Davis shows no signs of slowing down. His 2014 season was another for the ages with his work in coverage as good as any linebacker. He might not have the picks to earn the praise, but his ability to keep things in front of him and limit the yardage after the catch. Some stellar work rushing the passer added to the notion that there aren’t many linebackers you’d rather on the field on a passing down than Davis.

Best Performance: Week 11, ATL @ CAR, +4.7

Key Stat: Tied with the Broncos Brandon Marshall for the highest coverage grade of any 4-3 outside linebacker.

How do they compare different position groups? Does the importance of a QB (or DE, LT, etc) over a LB automatically place the top QBs above TD? If so then being ranked 38 is actually pretty damn high in my opinion, considering how little respect he's gotten in his career outside of the Carolinas.

- This list is created with an All Positions Created Equal mantra. So you won’t see 32 quarterbacks heading the list even though that is the most valuable position, instead seeing how guys played relative to what is expected from their position. You might disagree with this for doing a Top 101 list which is your right, but this is how we’ve done it for the past four years and will continue doing it so that every player has a fair shot at getting the respect they deserve.

Thanks. I wonder how they determine "what is expected from their position."

It's basically how they do their grading system. They don't grade positively for doing what an NFL player is expected to do. It's how Brady got a negative grade in the Super Bowl despite throwing for 350+ yds, 4 TD's and having a 74% completion percentage. Most of his throws were short routes to open receivers which every QB should complete so he gets a zero grade for that.

On a side note, thankfully it looks like the PFF Lavonte David circle jerk is over.  I'm glad.

Dude is a good player, but holy hell they hyped him up unbelievably so in 2013 and had so many people thinking he's so much more than what he actually is... just simply a good player - not some game changer.

    • Fug Em!   Lil bastard was milking injuries most of his time here. The moment he leaves he's all of a sudden a workhorse RB and a MVP candidate.   *Poo me up I'm a big boy I can handle it.
    • Another source: NFL Rumors: Hakeem Butler to Visit Panthers After UFL Success, Wade Phillips' Praise ZACH BACHAR JUNE 10, 2024 The Carolina Panthers are expected to conduct a workout with UFL wide receiver Hakeem Butler, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Butler recorded a league-leading 652 receiving yards as a member of the St. Louis Battlehawks. He was previously a fourth-round draft pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2019. After the Battlehawks were defeated by the San Antonio Brahmas in the XFL Conference title game, Brahmas head coach and longtime NFL coach Wade Phillips told the receiver that "I'm going to tell everybody in the NFL that I talk to that you need to be playing," via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. Despite the loss by St. Louis, Butler still hauled in six receptions for a team-high 59 receiving yards. The 28-year-old was named the 2024 UFL Offensive Player of the Year, as he was one of only two wideouts to have multiple games with at least 100 receiving yards. While the Panthers added Diontae Johnson and first-round rookie Xavier Legette to their wide receiver room in the offseason, they could still use some depth in the form of Butler. Carolina isn't opposed to picking up former UFL players, as Rapoport revealed on Thursday that the team is also "expected" to sign All-UFL receiver Daewood Davis. Although Butler was selected by the Cardinals in the 2019 draft, he did not play as a rookie due to a hand injury and only appeared in two regular-season games as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020. He did not record a catch. Butler signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2023 offseason, although he ultimately didn't make the team's regular-season roster. At 6'5", he has the frame to potentially make an impact in training camp and earn a shot at making Carolina's 53-man roster. If his workout goes well with the Panthers, Butler could give himself another chance to possibly return to the NFL.
