Cam working hard on footwork

A really good read from the Charlotte Observer.

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/nfl/carolina-panthers/article24877963.html

The article's by Jonathan Jones based on comments from RR, and his own observations.  Very encouraging news.  A couple of quotes:

Cam Newton’s play at Wednesday’s practice was among the best Panthers coach Ron Rivera had ever seen from his quarterback in a practice.

He had another good day Thursday, making good and quick decisions and hitting his targets for the most part. [...]

“That’s one thing that Kenny and Mike have been working with him on, getting his footwork in the proper position and then getting set and throwing the ball,” Rivera said. “That’s something they’re going to continue to harp on. I saw a couple of new drills I hadn’t seen in the past as far as getting his footwork down. And you do see the difference. (Wednesday) was about as good as I’ve seen him as far as practice.”

As far as decision-making goes, Rivera sees Newton not going for it all each play. Carolina lacked the big plays last year, getting only 48 pass plays of 20 or more yards last year.

Rivera said Newton tends to “stick with a guy a little too long” downfield because of his ability to stay upright and dodge defenders. But now the quarterback is becoming more aware of his safety valves, or short passes, Rivera said.

“I think he’s learning that, ‘OK if I don’t have it right now, let me just give it to one of our guys and let him catch it and run,’ ” Rivera said. “We’ve got guys that can make you miss. You guys saw a couple of those guys the last few weeks—Fozzy Whittaker, Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert—with the ball in their hands out of the backfield how dangerous they can be.

“Then you run some crossing routes with Corey Brown and Teddy Ginn and all of a sudden they’re off to the races. I think he’s learning and understanding that part of the offense.”

So many games last year where Olsen, Williams, Dickson, Stewart, Whittaker, Bersin came open underneath as a checkdown, and Cam forced it downfield. Love the confidence, but a few smarter dump downs could've changed the outcome of a couple of games.

The footwork is huge too. When Cam stepped up into the pocket and let the pressure get pushed outside of him, and stepped into his throws, it was a thing of beauty. When he was flustered, under duress, and hit while throwing off his back foot, bad things happened.

This isn't the first time that I've seen an article about Cam owning his weaknesses of checkdowns and footwork this offseason. I think the accident, the injury time, humbling season last year, and new contract this year will allow us to see a new Cam in '15. It might be the homer in me or just excitement for football, but I think Cam is going to have his best season since his rookie campaign.

He truly appears ready to own and lead this team to greatness.

Another quote from the article. It seems Cam is gonna get together with all of the WRs and do some work before Training Camp:

Newton called the receiving group the “finest competition since I’ve been here.” He said everyone is expecting great things for each other at every position, and he plans to continue to work on team chemistry throughout the summer.

After his foundation’s 7-on-7 tournament next week, Newton will plan for the group to get together in July and train, likely at receivers coach Ricky Proehl’s facility in Greensboro.

Agree but you also have to have  a adequate OL that can get you in rhythm as a passer.

When we drafted him I thought it could be a 5 year project to make him an NFL QB. In some ways it has been. He's still not great at a few "pocket passer" skills. But his strong arm and ability to run have made him effective in ways we never imagined.

Wouldn't it be great if he could have a 4 year window of terrific pocket passer traits but also the athletic ability to run and create. And eventually as the physical gifts fade, his passer traits shine. Kind of like MJ getting that old man game in the late 90s.

As best I can remember, it seemed most people blamed those deep throws on Shula telling him to throw the deep ball.  I am not saying Shula did or did not tell him to do that, but it would be interesting to hear the before and after discussions on those plays.

According to Jeremy, Cam is making some questionable throws. I'm not sure who to believe. Nevermind, this is an ESPN piece...

I think they are working with him but completely changing how you throw and think is difficult.  So I'm not surprised he has questionable throws learning setting your feet more and not relying on your arm strength.  Try shooting a basketball the way your use to then don't bend your knees,  don't jump,  and stand still only moving your arms.  At first it'll be terrible but if you practice enough you'll start making baskets.
