4. Carolina Panthers - Picking a team that went 7-8-1 to finish last in its division might not seem like such a big stretch, but it does raise a few eyebrows when that club also happens to be the two-time defending NFC South champion. Behold the enigma that is the Carolina Panthers. No matter how impressive their December rally was, I can’t get past how shoddy a team the Panthers were for most of last season. When you mix in their ho-hum free agency work (Ted Ginn,Michael Oher, and Jonathan Martin?) and a puzzling top of the draft (Shaq Thompson and trading up for Devin Funchess?), it's really hard to view Carolina as a playoff contender.

I love it.  Historically, we're not good front runners.  We always seem to do our best when no one expects us to do anything.  How often does a back to back division champ with virtually no significant personnel losses get to enjoy an underdog role?  It's unheard of.

    • Man, we're desperate around here.  I had to look at Peppers' stats to see if I'm missing something, but no, he's an average guy at best.  Nothing impressive at all in his stats.  He's not a true safety at all, and I'm kind of annoyed with the jack of all trades players at this point.  Of course I see the PFF scores and everything, but I'm old school.  I believe the stats tell more about the player than the analytics.  This ain't moneyball here. (haha)  The best players put up numbers.  And when I look at the numbers, Peppers is just another player running around on the field.
    • People see what they want.  I have also stated since the moment we drafted Bryce….a badly owned team was screwing HIM over by setting him up to fail by coach/scheme design.   Core criticism isn’t actually Bryce…it’s Carolina/front office.  I could see Bryce being good.  I could see Canales being good.  But I don’t see them as a pairing.  Football is about fit.  Board is doing what the board does.  People were idiots who dared question the All Star staff.  People raged when Fitterer was criticized.  They raged when Rhule was criticized.   Until they didn’t.
    • Yeah and to make it weirder Moehrig is a FS, Peppers is a SS.
