Gil Brandt: Panthers chances of winning SB on par with Jags, Browns, Falcons and Titans

lol wat.  the teams are ranked

the Texans do not have a QB, they are ahead of us,

The Bills do not have a QB, they are ahead of us

The Bengals have Andy Dalton as their QB, they are ahead of us

Then what was our number?

Look, you want to pitch a fit about this?  Feel free. I find it a pretty useless exercise myself. I find even less worth in the constant switch between "hes great" and "he sucks" when it comes to analysts.

Reality: Gil Brandt has a longstanding rep as one of the best football minds around, and that isn't changed by him saying he doesn't think we'll go to the Super Bowl this year.

On the flipside, Pete Prisco is a crappy  analyst. And even if he becomes the biggest Panthers fan we've ever seen, he'll still be a crappy analyst.

Not everybody likes us, and there are some smart people who still think we're not there yet. Big deal. We'll see what happens when we hit the field.

So Gil Brandt gave his take on which of the 13 teams that never won the SB and "analyzed" their chances of winning. He had this to say..

Basicially he has us in the "bottom of the pile" class, also in that class are the following teams.. Falcons, Browns, Jaguars and Titans

I literally just lost ANY respect I had for Brandt, infact I think I might actually hate him.

I hate predictions that pretty much just copy and paste the records from last season, throw in a curve based on conventional wisdom (i.e. [-]Lions), and collect a check. Well done.

As illustrated in his list (and 2014 records)

1. Cardinals - 11-5

2. Bengals - 10-5

3. Eagles - 10-6

4. Chargers - 9-7

5. Vikings - 7-9

6. Lions - 11-5

7. Bills - 9-7

8. Texans - 9-7

9. Falcons - 6-10

10. Panthers - 7-8-1

11. Browns - 7-9

12. Jaguars - 3-13

13. Titans - 2-14

Homerism aside, the fact that we're bottom of the pile is mind blowing.  If the Bill's win a SB before us, i'll chop my junk off.

yep.

bills have an overrated TB who benefited from running behind the best OL in football and still have NO quarterback.

they don't sniff the playoffs as the Pats and Dolphins are both far superior teams.

I like Gil Brant. His stories alone make him an interesting listen. His analyst work is usually a little off, hence his opinion of the Panthers. No big deal, he is usually wrong about modern NFL football. No reason to hate the guy.

Well he hates the Panthers apparently and doesn't do enough research on them so...

Can't believe you guys think you're some kind of juggernaut

Not talking poo, but you were indeed 7-8-1 last year and looked pretty bad most of the year. How can you blame pundits for not buying into the Panthers?  They don't post on the Huddle.

i don't think we're as good as the cardinals (when healthy), eagles, chargers, and maybe vikings (who will be great this year) but we are sure as poo not as bad as the jags and titans.

    • I think his stats will depend on the development of the rookies and sophomore receivers, which isn't totally under is control. The eye test is a different story. Has to consistently look the part before you decide to pay him Purdy money.
    • Interestingly I think we have kind of of gone through this as an organization. Richardson implemented an FO driven tank. Bad roster, no cash spent, coach uninterested. It may have been for different reasons but I think the results were the same. A team that wasn't going to win many if any games. We ended up with the #1 pick. Cam Newton came in and changed the franchise. It worked, but Cam himself pointed to the losing culture in the locker room needing to be changed. It probably took about 2-3 years for that to happen. Tank worked pretty damn well for us. Cam is one of one. Not another like him, everyone can't deliver on his draft status AND change a culture basically on his own.  So as an exercise here are the last 30 #1 picks. If you tanked and got to pick #1 how many of these guys do you think were worth it? Not just good players, but franchise changers. Guys who will take your culture and shift it so the tank was actually worth it. I would say maybe 9 or 10 guys would be worth a tank, pending the last 5 picks?    2025: Cam Ward (Miami (FL)) - Tennessee Titans 2024: Caleb Williams (USC) – Chicago Bears 2023: Bryce Young (Alabama) – Carolina Panthers 2022: Travon Walker (Georgia) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2021: Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2020: Joe Burrow (LSU) – Cincinnati Bengals 2019: Kyler Murray (Oklahoma) – Arizona Cardinals 2018: Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma) – Cleveland Browns 2017: Myles Garrett (Texas A&M) – Cleveland Browns 2016: Jared Goff (California) – Los Angeles Rams 2015: Jameis Winston (Florida State) – Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2014: Jadeveon Clowney (South Carolina) – Houston Texans 2013: Eric Fisher (Central Michigan) – Kansas City Chiefs 2012: Andrew Luck (Stanford) – Indianapolis Colts 2011: Cam Newton (Auburn) – Carolina Panthers 2010: Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) – St. Louis Rams 2009: Matthew Stafford (Georgia) – Detroit Lions 2008: Jake Long (Michigan) – Miami Dolphins 2007: JaMarcus Russell (LSU) – Oakland Raiders 2006: Mario Williams (North Carolina State) – Houston Texans 2005: Alex Smith (Utah) – San Francisco 49ers 2004: Eli Manning (Mississippi) – San Diego Chargers 2003: Carson Palmer (USC) – Cincinnati Bengals 2002: David Carr (Fresno State) – Houston Texans 2001: Michael Vick (Virginia Tech) – Atlanta Falcons 2000: Courtney Brown (Penn State) – Cleveland Browns 1999: Tim Couch (Kentucky) – Cleveland Browns 1998: Peyton Manning (Tennessee) – Indianapolis Colts 1997: Orlando Pace (Ohio State) – St. Louis Rams 1996: Keyshawn Johnson (USC) – New York Jets 1995: Ki-Jana Carter (Penn State) – Cincinnati Bengals
