Steve Smith is on and I called in and got through . I mentioned the Carolina Huddle and asked if he would think about coming back to retire a Panther. He didn't really give a clear answer but I thought it was cool anyway . Shout out to the huddle!!

Unless JR passes away between now and Smitty retiring, he'll be back on a one day retirement contract if nothing else. If JR does pass away, all bets are off because he's burned a lot of bridges here.

I'm one of those bridges. Before he left I knew he would come back and retire a Panther and that made me feel good. Then after all the crap he pulled and said I now just don't care either way.... and that's sad.

Then you never understood Smitty in the first place and didn't deserve him anyways.

I kind of expected Smitty to talk trash.  When has he ever not talked trash about an opponent?

I'm not talking about trash talk. Go back and look up the things he did last year. The subtle jabs at the Panthers when they were not the topic to that crap about Cam struggling in the red zone. We all knew he would trash talk and that didn't bother me he took it to another level. The problem is he isn't the first or last person to be cut from a team and sooooo many more people showed more class.

It is what it is. I still love Beason of course he didn't show his ass though.

You wouldn't be upset if your family set you out on the street?

This is valid. But KMC's point is also valid because every fan of a team that isn't the Panthers hates Steve Smith. Just like we can't stand Richard Sherman or Colin Kaepernick or Russel Wilson.

So it's understandable to love his antics while he is on your team and then loathe him after he isn't. Not everybody is necessarily gonna give him a pass based on "Smitty gonna Smitty".

And that view is wrong. The Panthers did as much for Steve Smith as Steve Smith did for the Panthers. They made a decision and it was a decision based Solely on Steve Smith and his actions. At the end of the day cutting Smith made the Panthers better (I don't think Benjamin had as good a season last year if Smith was on the team) and put the leadership into the hands of the man who the team wanted to be the leader moving forward (wasn't going to happen with Smith still here)

But it also worked out for Steve who admitted he busted his ass to get in the best shape his been in in years.... "to show them". He played well and was on a team that made it to the divisional round of the playoffs.

No I don't feel bad for Smith (there's a reason we never developed a #2 under him and it wasn't all USC curse or Hurney's piss poor drafting) and I think as a fan I can be more grey when it comes to Steve. Its not black and white. I DON'T have to love him just because he gave us X-clown and played here (he got paid well to play here) but I don't hate him either. I just don't care if he retires here or not because of the way he handled things... which ironically gave me all the proof I needed to justify cutting him and moving on.

come on dude

there are players who are going to be cut from the panthers (and every other NFL team) in camp and the preseason this year that aren't going to be in one fiftieth of the shape steve smith was when he was released.  we've heard him make comments about the nature of the NFL being a business at its core but all that fell apart when the impossible actually happened to him.

I think th worst part for me is he said he was ok just collecting a check from the Panthers. Then when he was cut he played at a higher level. I will never understand how so many people were pissed at Peppers for the same thing yet Smith gets a pass.

    • I don’t know about floor in a team defense sense but we needed more.  The floor that I am familiar with is our QBs floor and it is so low that every other part of the team needs to be beefed up.     We tried our best to improve these things and I think we did improve the defense and we at least kept the offense  from sinking from no LT.  And ostensibly helped the receivers too.   So we kept a window open that we at least have a chance to improve our record by a game of two.  Which would probably give us the division.

    • Yeah. I am one of. those who think a JAG RB can eat with really good blocking. (Brooks is most important in my mind, in tbe passing game and that is what we’ll lose without him)  There are a lot of aspects to this. The big one that caused us to struggle is Young and his arm scared no one.  Best back, best blocking still cannot defeat a really good defense if they are not forced to respect the pass.  And teams did not.    But, a strong OL and running game Can get us over against weaker defenses.  And if Bryce still doesn’t scare anyone we can still win some games. Like last year  So it is really important to tend to that OL.   Get that straight and see if in his fourth year he can finally back defenses off. That is what if is all about this year to me, on the Bryce front.
