How Elite is this defense going to be?

Recommended Posts

When you think of the addition of Peanut and Coleman to this defense.  Where really is a weakness?

Our defense in the first half was tough against the first team offense of the reigning Super Bowl Champs.  And that was without 3/4 of our starting Defensive Line.

Every spot we have a quality player on our defense. The way McDermott and Wilks run this defense as long as we stay healthy the sky is the limit.

I sometimes cannot contain my excitement over this defensive squad.

Could this defense be as good as any in NFL History?  Could we set records with this defense?

It is going to be good to see if we can.

Middle of the pack due to spending way too much time on the field due to continued offensive ineptitude.

A valid point. The offense will need to string together some first downs and long drives to give the D a break. Some points on the board would be nice, too, though 17 or 21 may be enough. I like what I've seen lately out of Ealy, but I'd like to see it on a regular basis.

Calm it down with the "shut down Tom Brady" narrative, he had a combined 43 passer rating with 3/9 completions in his first two games and is going through some personal issues with Gisele at the moment so we really need to calm down about the performance against NE.

We're not elite yet and no where near the best defenses in NFL history. We have a legitimate hole at DE and need to get the Dline healthy before we start getting too excited.

There are alot of weapons for McDermott to use in the blitz packages and the secondary can absolutely get tighter in man coverage than we could at the beginning of last year.

I think it really depends on if Star can stay healthy or not. I know that our defense has tons of leaders and talent, ranging from Luke (who I think is both the best player on our team and second only to JJ Watt as the best defensive player in the league), CJ, TD, KK, etc. But, Star is the guy who really takes the pressure off of the linebackers, who really eats up those blocks, and who allows the ends to run so freely.

If both Star and KK stay healthy the entire season, we could easily be the best defense in the NFL, barring one or two in front of us. If Star stays gimpy, we could be looking at a long season.

We have arguably the best DL in the league

We have arguably the best LB Corps in the League (Lead by arguably the best defensive player in the game)

Our secondary is much improved and I see Tillman being the ring leader of very cocky secondary. We have a great nickel who could be starting in Benewikere.

Our offense will feed off of great field position and get into a groove.

Don't give me that GD Brady is having personal issues.  He's the starting QB for the reigning SB champs.  He has been running Billicheats offense for many years.  I think he should be able to do this in his sleep.  Give the defense credit instead of making excuses for the biggest baby in the NFL.

They'll be awesome around week 10 when Harper gets hurt and Coleman comes in and suddenly we have run support that doesn't choose the wrong gap and allow 80 yard rushes constantly. The move should be soon enough to end the season strong and boost us to 5-11 or even 6-10.

Our defense wasn't elite by any standards last year and I don't think they will be this year.

Roman Harper is a huge liability in coverage, Tillman's health is a question mark, and we are going to be heavily reliant on Kony Ealy to be a very good defensive end. Couple those things with a worrisome Star injury and an offense that is going to keep this defense on the field; I'd say there are some things standing in the way of this defense being elite

    • I like what Freeling brings to the table all around. If he is willing to put in the work he has an opportunity to be one of the better Tackles in the league down the line. Hunter Brazzell and Hecht are all premium additions but development from our staff are the key to unlocking them. Hopefully Lee and Wheatley will provide much needed additional depth to our secondary. Beyond that it's important not to get too caught up in draft grades. Many drafts over the years that turned out to be really good were not fawned over with praise. While some that were ended up being historical duds. Panthers fans ought to know this as well as anyone. In conclusion...
    • Maybe a bit of a homer take but I can't give us a grade lower than A.   Freeling was arguably the best LT prospect in the draft.  His athletic ability is off the chart and at 6'7" that can move.  It was a no brainer pick.   Hunter's key word is Violence. Putting him next to Brown should scare an offensive coordinator. These two give Scourton and Phillips plenty of chances to get one on one opportunities. Brazzell, another tall receiver with sprinter speed.  Our WR room is filled with tall talented WR.  Brazzell is going to give us a WR that can take to roof off the defense.  Basically Jimmy Horn with size. W. Lee III has a nickname of the Blanket. (heard this on the Beleav podcast with J. Stewart)  What a great name.  A great value in the 5th round. Hecht A strong, fast and extremely smart center. Many had him listed as the best center in the draft.  He's most likely a starter sooner than later. Wheatley A good safety in round 5.  Someone who could see playing time.   Kuwatch  I love this pick.  At minimum he will be a key piece on special teams and with some good coaching he'll see some packages where he'll play.  His down piece is he doesn't stay up in the running game.  Good coaching will fix this.  He reminds me a bit of A.J. Klein.   All these picks were great value.  I believe everyone of them were graded higher than the pick we took them.   Dan Morgan is IMO doing a great job turning this team into a good team with great depth.
