Starters at WR not set in stone yet per Reed

Corey had an awful game without question...however he does get a benefit of the doubt bc he did play last season and made plays, caught passes and improved.

1 preseason game that awful should be treated as an outlier(bc of his one season of actual playing) to improve upon and not a defining evaluation of a player.

If that game was in Coreys first season you better believe he would have been cut..it is just the team has some investment in him(coaching, continuity, playbook knowledge) and sadly he, as an undrafted rookie has some skills that seperate him from the other WRs.

Correct those drops Corey.

Yes and no on this.  He did play last season, but his initial role he was brought in for, he bombed at (returner).  I mean, he bombed so hard that we put flipping Bersin back there.  As a receiver, he had some decent flashes, but with him being injured for a lot of the season, it was just that, flashes.  I'll just say, he has been given FAR longer of a leash than someone like Robert Lester who (like brown) had a rookie season filled with promise and looked good, then had a bad preseason, the difference is one got cut, and the other might actually be a starter for us.

I am not however advocating cutting brown, but these second tier receivers need a chance to prove themselves.  Hell, if it were up to me, Boykin and Norwood would get the start and Bersin would come in for a 3 WR set.  Again, I wouldn't cut brown, but he needs to know if he doesn't perform, he's not exempt from getting the axe.

I might agree with you had it been only one game, but Brown basically bombed in two games and was a non-factor in another one. As for last season, I have often said that people put way too much stock in 21 receptions and 296 yards with a 2.6 YAC. Moreover, the preponderance of his catches (if not all) were body catches, and that's not what you want to see out of an NFL receiver, much less a starting one.  As opposed to just acquiring or focusing on a receiver that can already run routes, and already attack the ball in the air and catch with his hands, it seems like the coaches are trying to force Brown into a role for which he is  obviously not prepared for at the moment, and perhaps never will be.

Thats the problem with this team....take a couple catches and all sudden that guy has "promise" and "high ceiling". Brown hasnt really done anything in the NFL or "guaranteed" a spot on the team this year. If anything, we should have brought more competition at the spot that can push him to keep his place rather than just draft Funchess and be done with it.. Hell...we did and we cut that guy.

Which is the main reason we are mediocre franchise.

A fairly sad situation if the last Preseason game meant to feature the end of your bench to fill a few final roster spots sets our WR core depth chart. Maybe the Steelers will play some competent DBs all game so we have some good tape?

well, we will be trotting out a bunch of WRs that should be filling the end of our bench so that seems consistent.

    • Smith-Wade for me. He has the path to some decent hefty snaps in Evero’s scheme. He held his own last year and improved as he continued to get snaps— If he makes some strides, could be a very capable nickel.  I agree with Sanders. Bryce had some trust in him that final Falcons game post crazy head-stand.  Bryce looked for him a lot that final game and made some critical catches to get us the W. Seems he’s put in major work so I’m hopeful about him.  Wallace will have an offseason under his belt. I like him a lot, was higher graded than most remember in his draft (I.e Brugler had him LB3/70 overall) but he isn’t as cerebral of an LB as we’re used to. I think he could thrive if we get D captain/film-junky type next to him— because right now that’s Jewell.  Still a bit cautious but love the talent. Rozeboom may snag some playing time from him if he’s still working out the kinks.
    • Didnt Canales already say starters are playing in the pre season? either way extra reps dont hurt but im not one of those people that think playing in the pre season would have saved Bryce from an awful start.
