J.Jones: Four players are on the roster bubble, need to play well

Brown is a lock.. Byrd won't get many snaps..

Someone with smoother hands, faster. Will get less reps over someone because he had some good plays last year in a depleted corps.

Its not ike the panthers have enough offensive plays to even play all their WR if they have 5 or 6. Other teams get almost every WR on the field at some point.

i have a very hard time seeing him getting cut unless he has a truly atrocious meltdown, and even then it's a stretch unless someone much, much better gets released.

I can see it if they put him in as a practice squad exception player.

(but I agree it probably won't happen)

I wouldn't be so sure. Gettleman said "That's why they call the position receiver."

Let him drop multiple passes and see what happens.

He's going to be out there. That's two reporters that have said it.

“There is nobody in Charlotte that watched him play last year that expected this,” Gettleman said. “You tell me you thought he had bad hands last year, I’ll tell you, ‘You don’t know what you’re talking about.’ Nobody saw it coming.

“Fortunately for us it’s the preseason, and he’s tough-minded, determined, and he’ll get through it. There isn’t one great receiver I’ve been around that hasn’t had a couple tough days at the office.”

Gettleman's not the type of guy to cut a young player making UDFA money who has shown he has great tools and talent. He doesn't just give up on a player because of one aspect of poor play in the preseason. Those drops don't mean anything at all. He was getting wide open against starters at will. That alone is enough to keep him here for the rest of his current contract. Maybe, just maybe, if Brown starts dropping a significant amount of passes when it counts he'll get waived. But I still doubt it. And that's assuming it'll happen, which is unlikely. You are so completely against him because you have had in the back of your mind since he was signed as UDFA that he is a "JAG" that it's clouding your thoughts. He's the best of our group of WRs right now, excluding Funchess who's an unknown, especially with his injury situation.

Ginn is definitely better. As a GM what do you do? Wait until it counts like you said and possibly lose games cause of the drops? Or let him go before?

What has Brown done in training camp or preseason THIS SEASON to show he deserves a roster spot?  I'm not saying definitely cut him.  I'm simply saying that he shouldn't be considered a lock.  I really hope we continue working on shaping our WR corps because honestly, Brown and Bersin are the Bell and Chandler of WRs.  They're guys who wouldn't make most NFL rosters, but our fanbase wants to believe they can be an answer for us.  They just keep making our roster because we have the worst WR corps in the NFL.

As a GM, I wouldn't cut a talented player because of a mental issue. I wouldn't rely on him as a starter, but there's no incentive to release him. Should the Patriots just cut Brady because of how poor he's looked this preseason? What if they possibly lose games cause of his interceptions? Obviously an extreme example, but Brown has shown more than enough for his roster spot to be guaranteed. His starting spot that he was in after KB went down may not be, but his roster spot absolutely is.

So demoting him or cutting him, what's the difference here? Assuming Corey sucks it bad again tomorrow, is being put down on the depth chart supposed to make him better?

The only reason Brown's spot is guaranteed is due to the fact that our WR corps is a combination of unproven and injured (KB and Funchess) and pure, unadulterated hot trash (the rest of the group).

Going into the season, I was hopeful about our WR corps, but that was because KB was looking like a beast and looked poised to potentially emerge as an elite NFL WR and Funchess looked good in camp.  I figured if we had those two, guys like Ginn, Brown, etc. could be given room to be good enough.  Then KB got hurt, Funchess has a lingering bad hammy and hasn't been able to get badly needed work in, Brown developed the yips and can't catch a cold and now all of a sudden our potentially promising looking WR corps now looks even worse than last year's unit.

    • It’ll be interesting to see how the board falls I completely agree with you on TE for us The safety from Oregon would be the cherry on top for Evero’s defense/scheme.  If a OL’men is there that you love it would be very hard to pass up. This fan base seems to just see Walker as a stop gap but I wouldn’t be so sure. He’s the same age as Ekwonu. He’s had a much more impressive career arc/progression than Icky has. He’s the better pass protector. As far as I see it if Walker has a good year I’d bring him back over Icky. Ekwonu isn’t some elite franchise LT. Playing next to Lewis is going to be great for Walker much like it has been for Icky. We definitely need to get younger/cheaper on the OL though so for this reason alone it’s still top of my list come round 1 if board falls this way  Could also use another corner with Mike Jackson’s deal up after this season and needing a nickel but Corey Thornton looked really good in that role in the limited time we got to see him. However he’s coming off an achillies injury and you never know with those.  Then as mentioned above we do still have a need at WR. As far as “weapons” go it’s kind of a 2 man show with Tmac and Coker and neither is a burner. If Jordan Tyson is there at 19 and we can have a young WR group locked up for cheap that’s a huge advantage cap wise  And don’t forget linebacker. That clip in Devin’s Lloyd blueprint they used from Evero saying they need more intelligence there could’ve been left out for Wallace’s sake but it’s true. Wallace is lost in coverage. Pair a smart linebacker with Lloyd and that’s a group with Wallace and Cherelus being depth
    • The fact that this is even a discussion is a testament of the level of front office badassery that's going on.
    • Not always. LT was for the Giants. So was Ray Lewis. Von Miller was moreso than Manning his final year in the season that shall not be named. It's usually the QB, but not always.
