Football is a funny thing, Part Two

In the final preseason game on Thursday night, Jordan Todman and Marcus Lucas both scored impressive touchdowns.

Dean Marlowe, on the other hand, whiffed on a rusher and allowed a punt block.

Todman and Lucas were cut today, while Marlowe made the final roster.

And no, I'm not saying those were bad decisions.

Just sayin', football is a funny thing.

It's true. Lucas did well to convert to TE, but he still needs a year to learn how to block. Swolebones is a better blocker and a decent receiver. I'm bit disappointed to see Todman go to be honest.

The fourth preseason doesn't really matter as much. They look at the OTA's, camp and the other games.

It's like Ginn is back. Melvin White who caused the fumble in the playoffs, and Reddick who recovered are both gone.

Not all teams in football would keep Brown, Brockel, Amini, Chandler...

Some fans don't have to worry so much about these glaring problems.with their team.

That's why I don't buy into the whole "best 53 man make the roster" talk.

Same here and anyone who has played football even up to the high school level knows politics and favoritism always plays some part in it. In my HS the coach would play the kids whose parents he knew regardless of if we lose or anything else....

(I even see the favoritism in kids soccer too)

I take it that their bodies of work in the decision makers minds outweighed one or two moments in a 4th preseason game.

Lucas and Todman both showed how good they are even if it was during scub time. Marlowe has been solid too but Rivera said something about keeping him around because of injuries and wanting to see more. That sounds like keeping for need rather than keeping the best players. 

Keeping the best players based on need. 

We wouldn't keep 8 running backs because they were the best on the team. 

if injuries are a concern, that position becomes a need and we keep the best player at that position.

Think about it this way:

Given-We have Stewart and CAP

When looking at the remaining RBs, maybe they wanted certain qualities: SCAT, good blocking, and a potential 3 down backup.

Todman - Kick returner, speedy and quick, average to below avg blocker

Fozzy - Shifty pass catcher, Kick returner, quick, strong blocker

Wegher - Strong runner, big upside, 3 down type guy, good speed+strength combo, ways to go with blocking

Todman gave a bit of both but not quite a particular type.  He played great in the preseason but looking how things fit, the cut makes sense.  Also, if they liked Wegher enough to put him on the team then Fozzy's strengths make even more sense to keep.

The real head scratcher for me this week was Lee Ward. im still hoping he makes the PS so he can take over for Tolbert whenever he leaves.

I liked Ward but he didnt look that apecial in games. He was a product of hype. I hope he is signed to the PS as I think he could contribute nicely with more technique work.

Sounds like someone didn't get a letter to put on their jacket.

Just messin'.  In reality you are right. It's like that in any profession. If you have two competitors that are fairly equal (plus or minus a couple) a person typically goes with what they know or who built the better rapport.
