State of the Texans OL

Jakob

Recommended Posts

Their offensive line was in disarray last week due to injuries and poor play, the end result was 5 sacks and numerous QB pressures. Now it seems that the Texans will be without All-Pro LT Duane Brown and their top TE. This is causing the Texans to shuffle almost the entire line. RT Derek Newton who was used and abused last Sunday will now be the starting LT. They picked up Oday Aboushi off the streets Wednesday and it appears he will start at LG. Also appears that they will be giving journeyman Jeff Adams his first career start at RT. Given the fact that Mallet is one of the slowest QB's in the NFL, this could be the matchup that makes or breaks the Panthers.

I'll update the OP if any changes are made.

Edit: Guard Xavier Su'a-Filo has been ruled out.

this could be huge for AJ Klein. without luke's diagnostic abilities it's going to be critical to keep the linebackers clean.

From what I understand, Klein's ability to read an offense is right up there with Kuechly.  Aside from that, I think their o-llinemen are going to have their hands full with our front four.  They've almost all been moved around, and new players are in the mix.  It may look like we did during that unmentionable stretch last season.  Expect a ton of errors and confusion along that o-line.

Clowney and Watt are obviously a major mismatch for anyone on our o-line. We have to establish the running game if we're going any kind of success on offense.

I doubt Klein is going to have trouble running the show. He sits around studying film with McD and Luke at night when most of the other players have gone home. The problem with Klein is his speed and size, but that's ok at MLB for now. Sometimes his smaller size actually helps him to slip right into those rushing lanes with barely any contact. He's gotta come up big in stopping the run or we're in deep trouble. The Texans want to run it in the worst way.

I feel pretty good about his playmaking and run stopping. The drop off is in pass coverage. He does his best while Luke is one of the best against the pass.

Watching him give chase out in space worries me. I think we've all noticed his speed is sort of hampered by being so short.

    • We don't have to tear down Dak to appreciate what Bryce did yesterday. Dak had 0 running game. If the cowboys were better, he'd be a legit MVP candidate if he keeps playing this way.  They did it with Ceedee last year, but they do a better job of anybody we play consistently of getting their best receiver off Jaycee.  Bryce was good too. If we just catch the ball that was intercepted, we probably win by 7+, and Bryce goes over 200 yards passing.  Biggest shift the last few weeks has been play calling. I thought Canales abandoned the run game way to early at times last year. This year he really seems to be sticking with it.  I still think Chuba is better at making 4 yards when there's nothing there, but Rico is better at making 30 yards when there's 6 there. I like the direction. Hopefully we can get Moton, Sanders and Coker back and really be dangerous. Our play action game is pretty deadly right now.  Unrelated: My favorite quality about Bryce right now is his ability to see the defensive hold and throw the ball there. He EXPOSES the officials when they don't call it. That one on Tetaroia yesterday late in the game was a bad miss on their part.
    • That sacks allowed number lookin juicy!
    • This is a game the Panthers should win... just the sort of game they lose. The Panthers have a bad habit that goes back years of playing down to the competition's level only to mess around and lose the game. The Jets game should be taken very seriously! But I want to enjoy the fact that they beat the Cowboys for at least another day or so!
