Shula called a better game today than McDermott

McD panicked. McCown came out and was carving up the zone, so he bailed on it and tried to zone blitz. That didn't work, so he went man across the board, so they started running the long drag routes and utilizing motion to get favorable matchups. McD was caught acting to the offense rather than reacting. That's a big no-no when it comes to defense. Make them show their hand and call the defense to combat it. On that last drive, we FINALLY went zone and almost had a pick. Then we DID have a pick.

McD had an off game. Part of it is honestly not having film and not knowing tendencies. If you notice, in the second half, our guys were in better position to make plays on the ball. Shaq about came away with a pick. So did Peanut. They'll have 3 weeks of tape on Jameis. I'm not worried about the defense.

Shula called a good game. Give him his props. He still doesn't understand basic offense though. Think. Really think. They're stacking the box on our basic under center formations....so he runs up the gut. Several times. They want to stack the box, make them pay. Come out in the I with stew and Tolbert, then motion out to a 4 wide look with Ginn, Olsen, Brown, and Tolbert. Watch the defense freak out scrambling to adjust. Run the read option with stew because they bailed the box to compensate. That's BASIC offensive scheme to combat that crap. They don't bump out to the spread look? Throw it. Make them pay.

Durr wat? pretty sure you fudged that.

No, I didn't. It's what Luke does best.

Defensively, you gameplan by looking at the opposing offense and thinking "what can I call to stop this formation?". Then, once you decide on the look you want to run against that formation, you have to look at coverage and blitz options. Then, in-game, you have to see the personnel and the arrangement and react. If you're the defensive coordinator and just saying "well, I want to run this blitz because it works a lot against other teams" you're going to lose. You start grasping at playcalls and getting guys out of position because you're too busy anticipating calls rather than letting your players get into an advantageous formation and react to the reads the offense gives you.

Literally no one could dislike Shula more than i do but he called a damn good game today overall....his redzone still sucks donkey balls but that's why Cam audibled and just bootlegged into the endzone instead of having to settle for a FG.

Rivera still couldn't game manage a pee wee game but yea when Rivera/McDermott suck Shula had a good day...I'd like to see a complete game still but 3-0 is 3-0 even with these injuries.

This isn't Madden, you can't just change to whatever play you want at the LOS. Apparently with that play, Cam was given several plays and he chose the right one for the defense. That particular play was designed as a run/pass option where the CB had to pick either staying with the TE or leaving leaving the TE and going after Cam. Cam can't just go rouge and do whatever he wants.

I don't think rouge is suitable for Cam's beautiful dark skin anyway.

McDermott was facing an offense no one had seen yet with a new QB at the helm. Now that McCown has actual game tape, other defensive coordinators will benefit.

Shula was facing the worst defense in the league that he has seen for 3 years straight. Even he is not bad enough to mess that up.

textbook cherry picking

PPG isn't as important as situational calls, Norman bailed us out

Not even close.  Part of a great defense is not only sacks but interceptions.   I was listening to the post game and they were discussing that Norman set up McCown for that interception.  Wanted him to throw the ball.

We had no clue on what McCown and the Saints were going to bring.   I think miss tackling was more of an issue than the actual scheme.   We allow far to many yards after initial contact than usual.  You can bet Rivera will address tackling tomorrow.

The fact is.  Our defense only gave up 16 points against a team that is known to be a high powered offense.  While Brees wasn't at the helm they had a very capable QB we underestimated.
