Is anyone concerned about our run defense?

This part of Newton's article caught my attention.

One reason to panic: The Panthers gave up more than 100 yards rushing (177) for the third time in six games. The foundation of this defense is stopping the run. When this unit struggled in a seven-game non-winning streak last season, gap control was an issue.

I know we gave up a big run, which makes the stats look bad. Also, the speedier, shiftier RBs like Sproles and Matthews seem to have more success against us, compared to power RBs. But, I'm somewhat surprised teams are having this much success running the ball on us, especially with Star/KK and Luke/TD in the starting lineup. How are the DEs looking in run defense? I know Charles Johnson excels in run defense, and he will be much needed when we face Atlanta's new high powered rushing attack.

Considering the murderer's row of running backs they threw at us last night, I'd say we did really well in run defense. Take away Matthew's big run and it would be a great performance. As far as DEs versus the run I saw Ealy making some great plays. Really, though, our defense relies on linebackers to stop runners, which can mean you give up a few yards per carry. Davis and Luke were all over the place making plays.

I'm not worried about our run defense very much right now. Or our pass defense, honestly.

I think we can be better than what we've shown on occasion.  I remember back to last year, team's having that one big run play.  And by the way I've never been a fan of "well if you take away this one play we did pretty well".  No you can't take away that play because it actually happened.

    • Not sure how much he was a long term piece of this team.   Sucks to not have him as part of the rotation.   Looks like it's Lee Hunter time.
    • This post was an error. Oops and sorry for the errors in the previous one. Too slow to edit.   We’ll see what they do.
    • I am not sure he will put the over the games but we’ll probably have them.   Two things I am thinking.  We have 4 preseason games.  All the coaches have enough service time to know the standards that are in place for decades. If I recall it was play your starters just a series to start woth and build it up until week theee where play a lot and you have week four to set hour roster. Evaluate before cuts.   Bevell will certainly have the whole thing down pat.   I’d they don’t do the fries and frie air will worry too. Because it is set up to do that.     I have said since they went t three preseason people have to figure a new way are still feeling it out and trying things.  We don’t have to this year.
