Some Further Perspective on Our Win Streak (good & bad)

As a longtime die-hard Panther fan, I am loving this team and our current success as much as anybody. But Coach Fox (love him or hate him) used to say that in the course of a football season you should “never get too high with the highs or too low with the lows.” So here is a dose of inconvenient truth that suggests we shouldn't get too full of ourselves yet.

We all know (because the media often reminds us) that our now 10-game regular-season win streak does not include any of the top NFL teams. While I expect at least one of this year's current victims to end up with a winning record (between Seattle, New Orleans, and Philly), that remains to be seen. So to look at our most recent results against known winning teams, we must go back to early-mid 2014 before our win streak began. In all, we played seven games last season against teams that ended with a winning record. And here were the results lest we forget:

Week 2 - Lions / Win (Spanking)

Week 3 - Steelers / Loss (Spanked)

Week 4 - Ravens / Loss (Spanked)

Week 6 – Bengals / Tie

Week 7 – Packers / Loss (Spanked)

Week 8 – Seahawks / Loss

Week 10 – Eagles / Loss (Spanked)

That's right; it's even worse than the media pundits have bothered to notice. Our last win against a known winning team was all the way back in week 2 of 2014 against the Detroit Lions. (And no, the Arizona Lindleys we beat in the playoffs would not have been a winning team). So we failed to win all 6 of the most recent games we played against known winning teams, and we got absolutely spanked in 4 of them!

Now, I'm still convinced this team has significantly improved. And even my look back at early-mid 2014 also gives some evidence of that. Before our win streak began at the end of 2014, we only won 2 of the 5 games we played against losing teams and even got spanked in 2 of those games too (Saints and Vikings). So, one thing the media has failed to notice is that it's not like we went from losing to all the good teams to beating all the bad teams; we went from losing to pretty much everybody to beating every (losing) team in our way since.

So yes, our team is certainly improved. But are we improved enough to beat the best teams? I believe we are. But I do respect those who prefer to wait and see.

Winning cures EVERYTHING. I don't know what else you want from this team. They go out there and give everything they have to beat the opponent to come back home and read "oh, it means nothing, you still suck" threads, SMH.

Even bad teams in the NFL are still pretty good teams. Some are better than others.happens.

This is an historic panther team, a team that is getting better. And not over looking Indy, but, beating Green Bay will be our coming out party to the country.

Tell me again how the losing streak where we went 1-6 is in anyway related to us being 6-0 this year. Last year Cam was hurt and limited, this year he is healthy and playing at an MVP level. Any other upgrade this year like a better O line, Ginn, and a better secondary are just bonuses. My perspective is that the two teams share little in common.

I don't care to hear about last year's team. Last year is over. New season, new team, new record.

You ou mentioned that last year we played the Eagles. Well last year's Eagles beat us, this year those Eagles lost. You could say that at least one of the teams changed something that ended up changing the outcome in this year's matchup.

last year's Seahawks beat us, twice. This year we won handily. Last year is not a very accurate picture of this year's team now, is it?

God I hope we make it to 8-0. Beating the Colts won't shut any of this "haven't beaten anyone" bullshit down, but being undefeated after taking down the almighty Packers will. If this team wants to kick the "are they real" thing in the teeth, they can't lose either of the next two games.

Also, we just beat Philly, who you managed to call "nobodies" and a "known winning team"in the same post, so f**k you.

Might mean nothing, but don't discount the dress rehearsal third preseason game against the Pats.  Sure, it was preseason and sure, both teams were without key parts but without Philly's drops we were two touchdowns better than they were in a little over a half of football-starters vs starters.  Think they didn't care?  BulllllCHIT.  Look only how they treated the 2014 preseason game and the fact they lost their starting FB for the year by playing him in the 4th and also played Blount and Garoppolo until the bitter end to get the win in such a "meaningless" game.

The ONLY thing that matters is wins and win/loss record.. No one and I mean no one ever remembers the circumstances and why/how teams won a SB or had a deep playoff run..

Seriously.. What do you think is most remembered about the Seahawks and Patriots after their SB victories?! You think people are going back and nitpicking their SB winning seasons saying "yea but in week 3 they beat this bad team then the next two weeks they beat two weaker teams." No way!

Not our fault the majority of NFL teams suck this year. Like someone else mentioned, this is a weird NFL season.

You have 6 extremely good teams and a huge drop off after that

    • Hey bud. There's a whole world of middle ground between playing like one of the worst QB's of the last 25 years and playing like a hall of famer. Maybe get out there and explore it a little bit.
    • Different people across the sports media spectrum will make their own conclusions about the tape for Bryce Young. Much of the conclusions will be based upon personal feelings instead of actual analysis. But to me the only opinion about the tape that truly matters is that of our opponent. The Jaguars are not a very good football team. They have a first time head coach. They are not significantly more talented than us. But they saw the same tape every other upcoming opponent has or will see and they formulated a very basic plan to negate anything Bryce Young was doing and they did so with ease.
