Yes, a bit of Captain Obvious here......~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Given that we're in the thick of the NFL season, free agency seems especially far away. But the franchise-shaping decisions that will come this offseason will be based in large part on what's transpiring on the field right now. So in the interest of looking at both the future and the present simultaneously, I've compiled a list of six pending free agents who must be retained by their current teams -- and six who should be allowed to walk away.

BRING THEM BACK

1) Josh Norman, CB, Carolina Panthers

I never would have thought Norman would be topping a list like this back when I first got a good look at him in the 2012 East-West Shrine Game. He's made remarkable progress in his four years in the NFL, emerging as a confident defender with great competitiveness and instincts who reminds me of former Cowboys great Everson Walls. Norman doesn't have great straight-ahead speed, but he sure knows where the ball is going and how to get there, and he's a good tackler. He has four picks (tied for third in the NFL) and has been burned on just 40.4 percent of the passes thrown his way -- among defenders who have been targeted 50 or more times, only Darrelle Revis (40.0 percent) is better. The 27-year-old is absolutely worth locking up with a long-term deal.

But couldn't help noticing who is retweeting this on Saturday night

OP twitter copy failed to show that Josh retweeted this article just a few minutes ago.  Just after retweeting a tweet from NY daily news reporter that claimed an ESPN article put Malcom Butler "right behind" Revis....yet failed to mention Josh Norman as the #1 Shut down corner.

Maybe it's just me but I love our guys playing with a chip on their shoulder.  And the fact that they are online the night before a game, getting the chip a little bigger....is A ok with me.

Norman will be 28 in one month.  I would tag him because he will want to be the highest paid CB in the league. He would then be 29 and negotiating for a long-term deal.   His agent would be stupid not to work out a deal this year.

Gettlemen is actually holding a few more cards that Norman right now, so I do not expect him to go all Marty Hurney and start raining Benjamins on him.

I think we need to draft a CB or two this year.  I am not sure the Panthers want to spend $14m on a CB- that tends to create a lesser CB on the other side (unless you want 20% of your cap at CB).

I am not going to worry about it now.  I think, however, that people will get mad at Gmen this offseason--again---only to be proven wrong----again.

Does anyone else feel uneasy about him testing the free agent waters?  I do. He loves this team, he is an "in the moment" guy who will do what he needs to to win, he love Igo & Sammi Jo, and he has done everything the orgnization has asked of him, he is "local".  I love the guy.  But there have been a couple of comments he's made this year ($$ wise) that make me uneasy.  I think he will stay and I wholeheartedly want him to.

Tag him, get him closer to 30, make him play one more year with his hair on fire and see what shakes out in the wash, I'm sorry but there have just been WAY too many of these "premiere corners" lately that have gotten money and faded into relative obscurity. Prince, Nnamdi, Sherman, all declined and Reavis has bounced around a little. Take Norman's best years and get a decent contract done or send him elsewhere.

I'm still of the opinion that J-No is a product of the players around him.

In a vacuum, he's certainly not on an island habituated by himself. There is always middle and deep coverage swung to the best opponent receiver.

I wouldn't call it an umbrella, but more of a lean stack. Otherwise, he would not be able to jump the route without a DB there behind the play.

im not trying to take away from his individual play, because he does his job well enough to make opposing QBs thinking twice and using the opposite side of the field.

Luke, TD and Shaquille are some of the best sideline to sideline runners in the league and that cuts off the underneath routes and forces receivers to play close as they can to the sticks.

id be ok with a franchise tag, in fact, I expect it. I also expect an upgrade over Harper and if Tre Boston and Bene' can make that jump (that most NFL players tend to do,) then the safety opening could be on the roster...at least that's what I'm hoping for from him.

we'll see...but I definitely see us going all defense in the first 3 or 4 rounds to address and shore up the DL and defensive backside going forward.

i love the make-up of this team, with or without KB. Luckily we have just enough speed and Savvy vet-man-ship that helps bring heady plays and coaching on the field and in the locker-room.

Love love an underrated, lower draft pick who comes in and proves himself, living w the chip that made him great. We had a guy like that here, and he will now likely be in the HOF. J No can do the same.

They leave him on an Island a bunch, doing it more and more each game as well. They typically give extra help in coverage to the slot or underneath and to Tillman's side of the field. Norman for the most part gets little coverage slide his way even when he's on a top WR.
