Good Article on Cam in Washington Post

I read the article. And didn't like it.

I thought it had several incorrect facts and suppositions, while not taking into consideration the sources. It was written for dramatic effect IMO.

It's obvious the writer was getting much of his info from people like Tony Giacomo (if I spelled it correctly) with out taking into consideration many things that may effect his opinion.

A 4-5 on a scale of 1-10 at best.

I just hope if this season doesn't turn out the way we all want that Charlotte and the surrounding cities will continue to be behind Cam and this team 100%. They have earned it even if they didn't need to sway people who doubted them.

cam is special. kuechly is special. td is special. olsen is special. kk is special. norman is special. This TEAM is full of special talent and people. I just hope this city continues to rally and support and foster these guys' growth and tell people irl they are wrong for doubting these guys and their abilities and celebrations. We are fanatics and this is our team. Support them through thick and thin. All that hard work and years defending Cam and co. is paying off.

Having just read the article, it definitely comes off as ignorant and taking its "facts" from slanted reports from ESPN and the like.  Teammates didn't like him?  News to me.  The "Rivera surrounded him with people without egos in order to let him be him" sounds like the article is saying that there was only room on the Panthers for one ego.  Cam is the epitome of "self confident but not egotistical".  He's always been about the team.  There's a difference between self confidence and ego, and Cam has never struck me as egotistical (aka narcissistic).  And there are other players with the same style of self confidence on the team, KB and Norman come to mind first.

So yea, I wasn't a fan of the article.  Seemed to have a slant.

just curious what was incorrect facts?...I may have missed that...

I read the article last night (and it was long). So I would have to go back and check (if someone else doesn't point out or list any here). But there were more than a few. For example, they listed Cam's age at 27 for starters. Not a big deal perse. However, when there's a few, you start to question. I'd have to go back to find some others.

A couple of things I do remember regards to context: The Writer IMO was looking for dramatic effect. He never mentioned in his article, that's it's a strong, but small minority of Panther fans that hate Cam Newton. The Luck thing is old hat. How many Panther fans are crying over LUck now, and how long ago has that been (them not wanting him)? Come one, so many Panther fans got over that quick, and the ones that didn't, don't feel that way now.

He also didn't mention, many of the people who claim to be Panther fans on the radio, are not. Remember, Charlotte's a transient city with a relatively new NFL team, thus many fans aren't Panther fans.

And regarding the south: The fact that many alleged Panther fans (and haterz) are from the SEC, who Cam absolutely blasted with his unsuspecting Auburn team has a lot to do with it. But of course the writer had to use race, as if that's the only thing when discussing the south. The SEC hate is strong, particularly from Alabama fans.

Hope that helps?

Other NFL players, including quarterbacks, have celebrated first downs and scores for years. But Newton is breaking new ground, and that ground is being disturbed by a 27-year-old African American in the Bible Belt.

Quote

He mostly kept to himself and shielded details from his personal life. If he was shown on the video scoreboard at a Charlotte Bobcats game, Newton sat straight-faced and waved away the camera. He sulked after interceptions and missed opportunities, covering his head with a towel and refusing sometimes to watch his team’s defense. Carolina lost 19 games in Newton’s first two seasons.

I'm not a fan of this article. As @FootballMaestro pointed out, this article does have several incorrect facts. The first being Cam's age. He is 26 not 27. Secondly, the writer claims Cam refused to watch when the defense was on the field. Where the hell did he get this from? It's just straight up lies.

Lastly,I don't know why this guy chose to talk to the people who work at WFNZ. Some of the people who call that station to talk crap about Cam are staged for ratings.

Agreed. I commented more above. But the writer appeared-either very naive, or writing with a slant. I couldn't believe some of the suppositions he made, such as what you listed above.

The reason the wfnz producers are relavent  is that they here the calls that get filtered out. So if their were residents who do or did not like Newton for whatever reason they would have heard them. It makes logical sense that they would be a source for this article.

Generally I'd say the article is lazy though. It's just a manufactured story to fill space.

Thanks.

You brought up some of the other inconsistencies in the article. Cause quite frankly, I was uninspired to go back and read such a long, mediocre tome. So thanks. LOL

But yes, the stuff in with Hornets, appeared totally made up and reaching to me (along with other things, not worth mentioning).

The writer was trying to hard to make Cam out to be Lazarus (rising from the dead), or a Phoenix from the ashes-regarding his play, attitude, and local fans. That many things he said, IMO,  were outright lies; could be perfectly explained due to Charlotte's transient/recent NFL team/SEC football nature, or just wild suppositions.

Yes, Cam played well from day one. And most Panther fans know, if it Cam wasn't on the team, they'd have 3-5 less wins/more losses per year.

Regarding his teammates. You're never going to please everyone all the time. It's only natural that not everyone has the same personality. But it only appears with Cam, that's what's natural for others (may take time for some to know you), because sensationalist material. And if Steve Smith, was one of the guys that he had personality clashes with, why would that be scandal?

This is why SS was shipped out dumb reporter! SMH

    • It’s going to get wild after this Sunday.  I would assume Dave has a really smart plan.   Sorta like the AZ plan last year.    After a big turnover heavy  bad game Bryce normally reels it in.  Bryce will have one of his standard 60% for 200 days and the Bryce defenders will use that as a “ I told you he is good” games.
    • Bryce is a really smart kid and I'm sure he knows all the answers to the test but he hasn't been able to overcome his lack of physical tools and other DC's know this and play him accordingly. I think Bryce has good processing but when the correct read is the WR 30 to 40 yards down field and you have a defensive lineman coming at you what can he really do? He just doesn't have the arm to effectively and consistently hurt the defense and I think that's what's gonna do him in.  Pime example look at the INT versus Dallas last year when Thelien was wide open down the seam and Bryce threw it from a clean pocket and the ball was way short. Dc's watched that and knew that Bryce can't throw the ball deep.
    • I'd give Bryce until the trade deadline to prove he's the answer and if he's not I'm dumping him for whatever pick we can get and I'm riding with Dalton the rest of the way.  2 and a half years is enough time to determine if he can be the QB going forward so for Bryce he needs to come out over the next couple of weeks and show that. The other players in the locker room don't wanna waste another year of their careers waiting to see if you'll ever figure it out.  If you took a poll of the players in the locker room I'm sure they'd rather lose with a respected veteran Dalton who at least gives them some creditability versus losing with Bryce who the entire media will say was let down by his supporting cast when in reality it's Bryce's physical limitations that are holding this team back.
