Washington Post: "Cam Newton is the best player in the NFL"

Pretty good fluff piece on our boy.  Cam has turned into a fuging national sensation this year.

Do you want to know what the best player in the NFL looks like? It looks like whatever Cam Newton wants to do at any particular moment. He leans on his back foot and flicks passes that travel as if they blazed out of a tank’s turret. He streaks down the field to flying-shoulder-bump receivers in the end zone. He bangs his body into and through packs of defenders. He starts smiling in the middle of plays, probably because he can’t help it.

The raging physicality of Newton’s game makes him the best player in the NFL. Newton probably sealed the MVP award Sunday evening, as Brady’s Patriots crumbled in New England and his Carolina Panthers bowed their backs in New Orleans and beat the Saints, 41-38, despite a 14-0 deficit. That loopy delight in the Superdome allowed Newton to showcase the breadth of his talent.

Newton is playing a more sophisticated version of the game he played at Auburn, when he submitted one of the finest seasons in college football history. It became clear during that season that he needed to play in a higher league. There have been times this season when it still looks that way, except there is no higher league.

Cam refused to let us die yesterday. He has that "win at any cost" mentality that we have desperately needed. That's my quarterback

Yeah. There were times yesterday I said to myself "can we really win this game", after all the lead changes during the third and 4th qtr. LOL

Nonetheless, I just "sat back and enjoyed the show", and Cam delivered!

Just three or four years ago they would have laid down and taken the loss. Cam now has the 'never say die' attitude and carries the whole offense with him. Was a time, if they where down by fourteen points.......they couldn't come back.

Cams always had that attitude. The man hates losing more than he likes winning.

Remember him yelling at Olsen after a game his rookie season they lost and Olsen told him it's ok that they lost? That do or die, never say never mantra has been there for him.

The difference between this year and years past is the rest of the team is adapting the mentality.

Now that they have? Look out.

Love the article but the 2nd part of this statement blew my mind. Can't remember any article from anyone praising Cam's accuracy, even though there have been games when he's been dead on. I hope Kilgore's opinion becomes the majority view.

"Whether his feet are set or he’s backpedaling, the velocity and accuracy of his passes is unmatched in the NFL. "

I loved where FOX picked up Cam going up and down the line and getting to each of his teammates after something went bad on the field (I forget which, there were a few early on), and Cam -- without his customary towel over his head -- was all "we got this, you got this, let's do this".

Rookie Cam wouldn't have done that.

You know who did?
Team Leader Cam. Team Captain Cam. MVP Cam.

Cam has gotten so much more accurate.  If his receivers could catch his completion percentage would be a good bit higher.  There was at least three Ted Ginn drops and a couple Funchess drops yesterday

    • If we lose tomorrow we’d have to sweep the Bucs in order to get into the playoffs. With a loss tomorrow the Bucs would then hold the tie breaker if we finished tied If we can’t split with NO then we sure as hell not sweeping Tampa It’s win or go home tomorrow in my eyes  Biggest game since 2017 playoff game imo
    • Grok AI: No, there are no credible reports that the Carolina Hurricanes offered Jake Guentzel the same contract terms as Tampa Bay (7 years, $63 million total, $9 million AAV) before he signed with the Lightning. Reliable sources, including The Athletic, consistently reported that Carolina’s offer during negotiations was an eight-year deal worth $64 million ($8 million AAV). Guentzel did not accept it promptly, leading the Hurricanes to trade his negotiating rights to Tampa Bay on June 30, 2024, for a 2025 third-round pick. He then quickly signed the 7x$9M deal with the Lightning on July 1, 2024. Guentzel himself later reflected (in 2025 interviews) that staying in Carolina was his initial preference, but negotiations stalled and “didn’t work out,” with Tampa’s opportunity becoming a “no-brainer.” No reports from outlets like ESPN, NHL.com, or insiders (e.g., Elliotte Friedman, Pierre LeBrun, Frank Seravalli) indicate Carolina ever matched or offered the Lightning’s exact terms—total money, AAV, or length. The extra year was Carolina’s key advantage, but they reportedly stuck closer to $8M AAV and moved on when Guentzel explored options.
