i wasnt being negative obviously and of course youll be 1st when no one else playing. anymore.

They will still be 3rd in rushing defense...b/c that is how the NFL defines things.

so after Carolina runs on Denver just like they did to your team they will still be the 3rd ranking run defense.

3rd?

Through 18 games, the Broncos have the best run defense in the NFL. They've allowed 3.30 yards per carry over 18 games. That included defending Adrian Peterson, Jamal Charles, Latavius Murray, Frank Gore, Matt Forte, DeAngelo Williams, Eddie Lacy, Jeremy Hill, and Alex Smith. Defending the run is not a defensive weakness of the Broncos (like a poster on here said - and which was what I responded to). Nobody in the NFL defends the run better than Denver.

Denver has never faced a running game like the Panthers will present to them. When they did face something similar, they gave up over 100yds. This game always has been and always will be about match ups, and I like how my Panthers match up in this one.

You how they say, stats are over rated, I took a bit of time to make a spreadsheet of how the Denver D faired in the running game this season.  I took each game, took the regular season NFL.com rushing offense rating for each team, their basic rushing stats (att/yards/avg/TD) and looked at the T/O differential as well.

Did you know the average rushing ranking for the 16 regular season games was 20th?  Or that when Denver's opponents ran the ball more than 28 times, they averaged 23.3 points in those games?  3/4 Of Denver's losses occurred when teams ran at least 23 times?  Now, I went really general in looking at the stats, I didn't go too crazy tracing time of possession or anything like that.

So do you blame Denver for beating up and holding up the run on bad teams?  Nope, they did their job.  Do you beat up the Panthers for playing the schedule they were given?  Nope.  All statics are misleading and leading in that people can turn the numbers anyway they see fit, like what I did.  That's also why there are those crazy stat junkie sites as well who take into effect the "effect" of a given team on another's perceive success.

It's very fair to say that we will be the best running team Denver's faced.  It's fair to expect some running success against their D.  It's also completely realistic that Denver could have the game of their lives against our running game and forced Cam to beat them.  Like how Pittsburgh won in week 15.

Fans can feel confident in their teams, that's why they are fans.  But there are some numbers out there which make us Carolina fans feel pretty good about our team as well.

its entertainment, I dont have to care to be entertained by it.

Ive watched sports my whole life so I understand the rhetoric and still have fun with the silly sports debates.

of course I came here being one of the  2 teams left. No point going to dead forums with teams not involved.

gotta see who and what else is out there in internet land.

have you gone to denver forums as well to tell them they have little shot to win? or are you actually thinking denver will win so you come here to argue? you aren't here to talk football in general despite your claim to being a fan of football with no team. i find that hard to believe as i doubt those guys rarely go teams message boards. since you claim to be objective, can you say anything that Panther fans should be optimistic about or are you here to try to curb our enthusiasm?

Good research. kind of reminds me of why Seattle's defense lead the league in fewest ppg allowed by facing the likes of Clausen twice, Weeden and a bunch of other bums. So there was no surprise when they faced a good offense, we put up 24 points in the first half.

So I finally have gone to a Denver board and found this guy's thread:

Quote

We need an honest appraisal about who we are going to face in 50.

Offensively: this team has a pretty big imbalance run vs pass. first in league in rushing attempts, 27th in league in passing attempts.

That being said, how did they do when they ran or passed? On the ground, they average 4.3 ypc - good for 10th in the league. In the air, they had a NY/A of 6.7 - good for 8th. As far as turnover avoidance, they were 10th.

Taken as a whole, this is a good offense - not a great one, just a good one. So, how did they lead the league in scoring? Two things: (1) their defense led the league in turnovers and defensive TD's. Along with this came the Panthers were second in the league in average field position. They had a lot of short fields to work with. (2) the Panthers led the league in red-zone scoring percentage. That's what having a stout running game can give you, but more importantly, Cam Newton is fantastic at the stripe.

Bottom line - this offense is not an unstoppable force. They benefited from a opportunistic defense to put up points. In terms of yards, this offense is not as good as the Steelers, Patriots, or even the Chargers. In terms of running attack (YPA), they aren't as good as the Vikings, Chiefs, or even Steelers.

looking at the stats, you know who they resemble the closest? the Chiefs. Panthers are the KC Chiefs with a competent coach and a QB who will throw the ball down-field.

I'll leave it to the football strategists to figure out how to stop them, but seeing how inbalanced they really are, and seeing what Wade did to the Patriots (an equally unbalanced team), I'm sure Wade will figure out what to do.

Defensively, the Panthers were 6th in scoring and yards. They were actually tied with the Broncos with the NFL lead in pass defense (6.2 Y/A), and 9th in run defense (3.9 Y/A). Like I said above, they led the league in generating turnovers. This is what concerns me the most. This is a quality defense - probably the best and most rounded one the Broncos have faced. The Broncos haven't played any other team that was top 10 in rushing D and pass D.

Individually, they have a DT with 11 sacks, the best cover MLB in the game, and one of the best CB's in the game. This team has talented players at all levels.

First bolded statement, that we have a big imbalance in run vs pass. Quite the opposite, we are THE MOST BALANCED TEAM IN THE NFL in regards to run vs pass. He went by where we ranked in the NFL in terms of run attempts vs pass attempts so 1 and 27 but thats an idiotic way to look at it.

Next bold is guy thinks we lead the league in defensive TDs. We had all of four during the regular season with no ST scores. Yes our defense gave us great field position, but like unlike so many other teams, we put the ball in the end zone and were the most effective red zone team in the league. That is where we struggled last year.

Next, here is where just looking at stats gets you in trouble. Really, we are not as good of a rushing team as Minn, KC or Pitt just because our YPC is slightly lower? Our rushed tend to pick up 1st downs as we run a lot of short yardage plays where we only go for what we need. Looking at stats, we closely resemble the Chiefs? Well, all you have to do is watch one of any of the games the two teams played this year and that statement is obviously false. Just because numbers we were similar, doesn't mean we are similar teams and I know for a fact they didnt throw 35 TDs this year.

The Broncos will need to accomplish things they haven't been able to do well all season: Effectively pass the ball, eliminate turnovers, score over 30 points, stop the run to name but a few.

Meanwhile... all the Panthers will need to do is do the same things they've done all year long: Dominate their opponents on both sides of the ball and win.

Bottom Line Denver:  To ensure victory the Broncos will need to reinvent themselves and accomplish things they haven't been able to do all season long.

Bottom Line Carolina:  To ensure victory the Panthers just need to be themselves.

Like I said in the other thread. In the playoff your defense is 10 of 12 in both yards and points allowed. The Panthers have done better in both.

On offense we are first in both yards and points in the playoffs.

In the playoffs our run d is right behind yours and you have played 2 teams that were devastated by injuries in their run game and couldn't threaten squat in that department. You are now facing the top running team in the playoffs.

Even if you take the #3 full season run defensive ranking we are just 1 spot and less than 5 yards per game allowed behind you. Couple that with the fact your run game is pretty pedestrian to below average well....

Nothing is looking too good for you....but the game will settle it regardless.

Objective  doesn't mean I need to believe positive things about both teams.

Denver forums are actually boring because they use to watching a team win more often. Over there it's like the 1920s...here its more like the 1960s.

They haven't won in 17 years. Also, the vast majority of their SBs resulted in embarrassing blow out losses.

They aren't used to winning that often.
