JPP, Giants not close to a deal

  • Gettlemen has NY Giants ties.  JPP is a Giant.  The Panthers could cut CJ, get a veteran to start opposite Ealy who will be 27 for most of the season.
  • JPP wants to be paid in the $10m per range, in a long-term deal.
  • This is a perfect situation for the Panthers to step in--first, we have the need and the cap room--we would save $1-2m (or more)  per season by cutting CJ and we would get 3 years younger.  JPP is more of a fit opposite Ealy; Ealy and CJ are both best suited at LDE.
  • I think JPP would take a slightly lower offer from the Panthers because there is the chance to win a ring and he would be joining a great defense.  Could we get him for $36m for 4 years?  Maybe.
  • Of course, there is some risk, but this could be worked out in guaranteed/unguaranteed money.
  • The draft is nicely stocked at DE, but note that most fit the profile of the 4-3 LDE--not many RDE types.  JPP would be, and with Addison, could give us a fierce presence on that side.  I realize we hope Miley steps up, another RDE prospect, but we should draft a LDE depth player to develop and play behind Ealy.
  • I think Gettlemen should be interested in these progressions.

Sorry if this is speculative, but it is better than some of the off season threads popping up on here.  I do not know much about the hand, but the player has potential.

What finger could he put a ring on? Do not want. He could cough on the opposing QB once he got there but that's about it. He can not wrap up.

That was a good one.  I am not sure what condition his hand is in--his "wrap" was due to recent surgery etc that was healing, and (the way I understand it) not a permanent thing.  Once he gets used to the hand, he may be more effective than we thought--but I admitted that I was not sure about the hand.

The issue is about the guaranteed money.  If it turns out he can play and he returns to form....

You have to realize--pass rushers in free agency have a catch--age, injuries, etc.  So if anyone is expecting an elite pass rusher in free agency--it rarely happens.  Protect yourself with the contract.

I am sure Gettlemen is being told all the dirt on the situation--

I'd take him for $9-10/year for sure. He definitely had issues tackling after coming back but he had no trouble creating pressure and he got another surgery recently so he supposedly doesn't have to wear the club next year so that could improve his tackling.

People are too caught up in the hand injury that JPP suffered and not focusing enough on his 41 QB pressures and 6 batted passes in half a season of play. Obviously the sack numbers weren't there but when you make the QB move his feet, good things usually happen.

    • Basically agree.  He is the one of that bunch that offers upgraded pass catching along with he is supposed to be kind of special.   Then you have the OL and the ideas that if they perform you can have JAG backs and still do well. So okay we could be fine.  But Brooks is important and to me that receiving element sets him apart.  So there sure is something riding on him.     What strikes me as incongruent is people over in Atlanta or those that follow them look at Penix with a third surgery and act like it is no big deal.      And we are on pins and needles over Brooks.  Either they should worry a lot more or we should worry a lot less.
    • I usually go a game or two optimist over the consensus here but this is too early for me to say. I need to see some players on the field.  I am not feeling real optimistic though.
    • Okay as a ‘take CJ’ fan I actually don’t obsess over CJ and Houston, contrary to the narrative.  But I thought I picked up some noise that his OL left a lot to be desired.    Not a single Beyce supporter would judge him harshly if he had a crappy OL. We all know that.    So be fair about it.  A QB needs to be protected.  Especially a guy that gets to his spot and wants to finish the play from there. Which CJ is.
