Panthers talking to punter Anger

The Panthers have had preliminary talks with former Jacksonville punter Bryan Anger, a league source said Tuesday.

If the Panthers end up signing Anger, they would be swapping punters with the Jaguars, who signed ex-Carolina punter Brad Nortman on the first day of free agency.

The Jags drafted Anger in the third round in 2012, ahead of such players as Russell Wilson, Josh Norman, Olivier Vernon and Mohamed Sanu.

He's about the exact same as Nortman as a player. Both have huge legs and both are liable to screw up every once and a while. Squarely in the average tier for punters. If we get him for less than the Jags paid Nortman then we come out as winners of the "trade."

As an aside, it's pretty sad for the other Panthers beat writers that Person has been the one getting the scoops on the Panthers in free agency. 2nd or 3rd one he's gotten and the other guys are basically nowhere to be found other than retweeting stuff the Panthers officially announce. I know Voth is dealing with family stuff according to his twitter but it is a sad state of affairs for reporters covering the Panthers.

J Jones is out at UNC Chapel Hill for their pro day today.  He's been sending out some tweets from there...  So, that's real work and a valid excuse for him, I'd say.

I think David Newton may be in FL for the NFL owners meetings?

What does it really matter who breaks  the information? All info comes out eventually anyway. Generally, the story behind the story is what interests me the most.

The real story here is possible competition between kickers.

This would be an odd swap.

Yes, we would theoretically "win" the trade if Anger agrees to a deal less than the Jags paid to Nortman, but if the Bucs were willing to offer Nortman money to Anger, why would he now accept less with us?  'Twould be strange...

(Not that I'd complain about some #Gettlemagic and another case of getting a decent player for less money.)

Wonder if we'll bring UDFA Matt Wile back for the 5th time after he was in a Panthers revolving door last offseason.  LOL.  Poor guy.

Oh it doesn't really. I'm happy for any news we get. It's just that there is so little of it and the fact that Person, who is objectively not very good at his job, is the only one breaking it is pretty sad for other beat reporters. I'm mostly just complaining and wishing we had more competent people covering the team.

Wait a Minute... the Jags chose a Punter over Sanu, Wilson and Norman? Wow.. Just imagine how good they would be if they didnt choose Anger..
