Browns Release Ifo Ekpre-Olomu

More than a year after a torn ACL suffered in practice derailed his hopes of being a first-round draft pick, cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu continues to try to re-establish his football career.

The Browns have announced that Ekpre-Olomu has been released. He’ll now be subject to the waivers system. If he clears waivers, he’ll become a free agent.

Cut with the “non-football injury” designation, Ekpre-Olomu’s knee apparently has still not fully recovered from the December 2014 injury.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the 49ers make a claim for Ekpre-Olomu, given that coach Chip Kelly recruited Ekpre-Olomu to Oregon.

Ekpre-Olomu reportedly received $3 million from an insurance company as a result of the injury. Still, if he ends up having no NFL career, he will have lost a lot more than that.

But, no, there continue to be no valid reason for providing college football players fair compensation for the millions their efforts generate.

Make that call Godfather Gettle for cheap. He probably does end up going to San Fran

His knee must be shredded for them to be giving up on him now. No harm in putting a claim in on him though. We can just fail him on his physical if it's that bad. If the long term prognosis is positive, but he isn't ready yet then he can be put on the non-football injury list* for 2016 so he doesn't take up a roster spot.

NFI list includes any injuries that occurred in college so even though it was a football injury, he qualifies for it.

When was he drafted?

7th round in 2015. He was a fringe 1st round pick before wrecking his knee right before his last bowl game. In truth he was probably looking at 2nd or 3rd round due to his size.

He claims that the knee is fine now, but I doubt that is the 100% truth. Wouldn't hurt to bring him in and see for ourselves.

Yeah there is no way he is actually 100%. The Browns may do a lot of dumb things, but not even they are dumb enough to release him right now if he was healthy. They'd at least wait for training camp if they believed he was healthy.

    • Scourton's interviews are telling to me that it's only a matter of time before he could really put it together.  His limitation tool-wise that I see is in his bend, but at the leaner size, it looks like it wasn't a problem at Purdue.   He has a good moveset and reads leverages very well (vet level well).  Plays both the speed/quickness (great change of direction) and has a power game with good hand usage.  Moves from what I've seen in my digs: I'm seeing cross-chop, fake crossers into bull, bull rush, spin (his preferred move of choice), hand shuck.  He's not unrefined by any means.   If he can do 2 things---I'm feeling confident from seeing his interviews that we have a real dude on our hands: 1) Diversifying his moveset/how it's deployed - Over-reliant on some, but again, he has a growing palette.  And is already great with his hands so things are in-place to coach up. 2) Developing a counter moveset and starting to play the chess game with an OT - He's very good at reading leverage, knowing when to change things up during a play.  But NFL coaching should start to teach him how to really create a plan based on an opponent.  What to throw at a guy first, how to confuse with fakes/counters, etc.  How to play against these tackles as a game progresses.   Overall, he has some things that give me serious optimism: Run Defense, speed moves, power moves, he's super young and has the size/length.  When you really spell it all out, I think we should get excited.  Temper expectations from a stat sheet standpoint, but he should be able to go in and make an impact.
