Panthers trading out of Round 1 more likely

With the Browns moving back to the 8th pick in the draft, and the Eagles and Rams surely taking the two QB's on the board, the Browns will most likely grab whatever blue chip player is left, but certainly won't reach for a QB at #8, as none of the prospects left warrant that type of pick.

This means that the Browns could be a likely candidate to select a QB with their first pick in the second round, but with several teams needing a backup to groom (Dallas, Chargers, etc), or simply a full time starter, (Browns, Broncos, etc), in addition to the added value of the fifth year option (especially for a QB), it would make sense for the #30 pick currently held by the Panthers to be sought after as several teams could wish to jump in front of the onslaught of teams vying for a QB after we pick.

Would you trade back 1-5 spots for an early 3rd? Would you be OK with the Gettle using that pick to trade back up again into the mid second round? Imagine securing players like Hunter Henry AND Sterling Shepard with our first two picks without giving up any of our original picks.

Gettleman won't want to give up a 5th year option on a first round selection. It is like a free franchise tag.

Another team would have to throw in their first for next year, and they would be idiots to do that for the 30th pick. But, that said.... Hurney.

Here's a somewhat plausible scenario:

Dallas knows we like Derrick Henry so they trade up in front of us with the Cards to get their RB

Gettleman loses out on the guy he was targeting to the pick in front of us 2 years in a row decides to trade back to the 49ers for their 2 and 3 and the 49ers take Cook/Lynch

We take someone at the 49ers 2nd then trade up to the middle of the second with our 2nd and the 49ers 3rd to get another good player.

I don't think I'd be ok with picking up just an early third to move back 3-6 picks because you lose the 5th year option after the first round.

I'd be okay with it if we picked up a second rounder next year from one of those teams instead of a third rounder this year though

Even if Lynch is gone a run on QBs could spook a team into trading up to get a guy they are scared the Broncos will take. I'd expect Lynch to go top 10 and probably Cook to even be gone by our pick, but I still wouldn't be surprised if someone traded with us to jump the Broncos. QBs make teams crazy.

u know if I am gettlemen and lynch is there at 30, knowing cleveland, and other teams want him.  I call denver and say look, u want this guy or what?  Were gonna trade out to a qb team unless you swap spots for a 3rd or 4th. just see what happens. He gets to keep his 5th year option.

Can I just take a moment and say how nice it is to have your franchise QB in hand and not have to be scrambling on draft day for one of these future scrubs?

That's what I was thinking. People say that the Panthers aren't making such stupid decisions but look how hard it is find a franchise QB. You got teams giving up entire drafts just at the chance to draft one. Without Cam, we may have been in the same position as the Eagles or Rams. The desperation is real.

    • Mike Davis is like yeah, why would these coaches expect me to watch film on our next opponent if I'm playing good.  Yeah, I really don't pay attention to a lot of stuff around me if I'm doing good.   also Mike Davis, how dare they give all the reps to CMC.  from just listening to that interview, I think Mike Davis likely was often in Mike Davis' way and he can't comprehend that aspect.  Even his story of why he hated people.....was weird.  He hated Steve Spurrier because Spurrier was like hey Mike, Marcus Lattimore left...and we need you to step up into that role/void and be more for us.   And Mike Davis was like, can you believe that motha trucka!! Nah Steve.  Just give me the ball and leave me alone (paraphrasing it all obviously but that was the gist).
    • Unless he's 1,000%, just sit him an extra week at this point to let him get his legs back under him. I want to see him out there as much as the next guy, but this was a serious thing and I'd rather wait an extra week than put him out one day too early and risk something going wrong, play the long game for once.
    • God, these posts are really starting to piss me off If we're relying on Moore, Idzik, and Canales to carry that weight, then we're royally screwing over our young WR room.  It's not that those guys can't help with some of it, but these young promising WRs are going to miss out on a lot of learning that can only be provided by the vets on the team.   You do realize that coaches spend ZERO time in the locker room, right?   They are only in there just before games and at halftime, but the rest of the week, they have their own locker room, they only spend time with the players on the field and in the film room.  There is soooooo much time that you're leaving unaccounted for where players are working together to get better. Players are constantly talking about their game and how they can improve while they're in the locker room.  If you think career long special teamer David Moore is going to be able to carry that water in the locker room, then you're sorely and woefully mistaken. Even beyond that, if a coach pulls a player aside to give advice between series, that still means there are 4-5 other WRs who aren't getting individual advice, where that's normally a time a vet like Thielen is going over with them what he's seeing out there and how they can do X, Y, or Z to do A, B, or C better on the next drive.
