Bryan Srickland's five for consideration tomorrow night

With round 1 of the draft right around the corner, we are all bursting at the seams with anticipation. Threads like these are a way to expend a little energy before destiny gradually lifts the veil, and we finally get a clear view of what is before us. Smiles or frowns will be evident for all the world to see.

Bryan Strickland of Panthers.com has a closer seat than most---if not all---of us to Dave Gettleman, the Panthers' Maser of Ceremonies, who will presumably wed the Panthers with their 2016 number one pick Thursday night.  But even Strickland hints that the dynamics of the draft sometimes make reading tea leaves look like child's play.

Responding to his mailbag, Ask Bryan, Strickland admittedly hedged his bets by coming up with five names---two more than the Huddle's very own Jeremy Igo---with three of them being Igo's top prospects as well.

"...I'll present five names from five different positions for your consideration, selected based on what I generally think makes sense as well as a nonsensical add-on: The Panthers' last four first-round picks didn't attend the draft in person, so I'll predict that streak keeps going.

In the secondary, how about Houston cornerback William Jackson III or West Virginia safety Karl Joseph? Up front, I'll throw out Oklahoma State defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah (Clemson's Kevin Dodd was invited to the draft). And on offense I'll mention the Henrys – Alabama running back Derrick Henry and Arkansas tight end Hunter Henry."

Ah...the two Henrys, yet again, to the delight of some and consternation of many, and what is looking like a late favorite to take the spot, Emmanuel Ogbah.

But, wait! Karl Joseph, pretty much a consensus first round talent, but for medical concerns, has made his way into the picture. The thing is that Joseph is also in the top five boom-or-bust prospects  of Pro Football Focus (along with Ogbah) because of medical concerns and a relatively small sample size.  Strickland also mentions William Jackson III, a player who has not been discussed as much as the others on the Huddle, but who is very much on the radar of the likes of Pro Football Focus. One PFF analyst that believes he may be the best pure corner prospect in the draft. Moreover, on an off note, Charley Casserly also selected Jackson for us on NFLN's live mock draft.

So, it would seem that Emmanuel Ogbah is a more than serious contender, as are Derrick and Hunter Henry (like it or not), but don't sleep on William Jackson III. As for Joseph, I just haven't heard of any Panthers' ties except for pure speculation, but perhaps Strickland knows something more than most of us.

By the way, don't let that mention of Kevin Dodd escape you.

Let's just hope Coleman falls to us.

Voth was hinting at him being our pick yesterday if he's available. Who knows? Maybe we are one of the teams that has talked to Minnesota about moving up. Our 1st and 3rd for #23 fits the trade value chart pretty closely and #23 is right around Coleman's sweet spot.

They won't give up a pick for Coleman as there's a lot of value at the back end of the 1st round but if he's there at #30 he'd be considered for sure

I think Jackson will be the pick that makes all of us forget about Josh Norman.

of course it takes a year or 2 for corners to really develop and learn the scheme, but I just have a feeling that he will turn out to be an outstanding corner in this league

I agree with you, but I don't see where we actually brought him in for a visit. From what I see the guy looks legit and could be a stud in our system. Day one starter in our defense. But gettleman doesn't seem to value corners that much so I don't know if he will use a first round pick on one. But considering it being at the end of the first round and a fifth year option I would jump on it.

Cool, and then by year 4 we can offer him a franchise tag and rescind it.

In just my on prediction I think its going to be Derrick Henry.... Gman type player ... he can say he has a hog mollie RB... and I don't see why Ogbah gets so much hype.... he to me is the biggest risk/reward player that's considered in the 1st round... But I trust everything Gman does.

    • Call me crazy but if you’re in the bottom 7 in efficiency using Zone 84% of the time why not try something else? You paid Jaycee top 5 CB money use him more effectively. Zone is only efficient if you can generate a good pass rush to force a QB into mistakes otherwise you will get picked apart
    • Good Lord this board has become a cesspool of negativity and where fandom becomes something twisted and unrecognizable.
    • Yeah, I could jump right into the unbelievable Bryce debate now that some people are trying to flip the script because Bryce Young has, at most, a handful of decent games as a pro, but that's going to work itself out. Suffice it to say that I've seen better QBs (with an s) in a Panthers uniform, and I've certainly seen better QBs be drafted while we're playing around with Bryce, one of them who beat the crap out of us already this season... Let's forget about Bryce (and his markedly underwhelming play since he's been here); I think that most sane fans will agree that drafting him was an error, but it happens. Sure, it doesn't happen to the tune of King's ransom---including your main receiver---but it happens. You bet, you lose. Speaking of receivers...and betting and losing... Oh, man, we drafted Xavier Legette. Yes, just like with Bryce, I've entered "the dark side." Some Huddlers were telling us from the beginning, and they were right. But, I'm not apologizing for waiting to see what a guy's got before making my decision on him. X was a one-year wonder at South Carolina who parlayed some really nice production that season, a great personality and thick country accent, into becoming a first round pick (but only in Carolina). For Dan Morgan and company, He was a big swing that has turned into a big whiff (and I can still feel the ill breeze from that one). Sh¡t happens, right? Well, not so fast. Ladd McConkey was the decidedly more polished receiver who was literally ready to hit the ground running as soon as stepping onto the field as a pro. Ladd was never the biggest guy (though not the smallest), but he was the guy that could run routes, always seemed to get open---no question---and had the same speed as X, but with legit quickness and nuanced shake and bake. But Dan chose the project. He chose the guy where the game speed looks more like a tractor trailer than a 5.0 mustang. Look, I've supported X (just like Bryce) many many a day, but no more. Now I'm not saying that I won't root for the guy. Just like with Bryce, he seems like a great kid. But as far as giving excuses for the kid, and, perhaps more importantly, waiting for some miraculous breakout, I'm done with that. I've seen enough. You don't draft a project for a project. And yes, Bryce had proven to be a project after his first season. In my mind, drafting a supposedly number one receiver that needs lots of development for a starting quarterback that needs immediate help to try and further his development is not going to lead to good things. Pick the surest guy. Or at least pick the one who appears to be the surest guy, because picking can be tricky... especially when you're too busy tricking yourself.
