Good read on UDFA WR Keyarris Garrett

Why? Tavares King, Marvin McNutt,  damiere Byrd, hell even Duron Carter...  Little impact.

To be fair Byrd was a updrafted rookie last year that was super raw compared to Philly coming out of college. I'm kinda excited to see if Byrd has progressed but not betting the house for instant success.

I see a bit of Keenan Allen in Garrett, minus Allen's route tree.

We're in a tough position because I feel like Ginn is gone after this season, so a spot opens up there to go along with KB-Funch-Philly.  Do we carry 6 this year?

Hoping for some big plays from this guy in camp. We're overdue for a really good UDFA.

???

Philly came up huge for us last season and I dare say that Norwell is good enough to start on any team in the nfl.

Let's  try again.

Philly played a lot of snaps,  and he should have been more productive given his arguably WR1 quantity of snaps.  He just wasn't  as efficient or productive as you'd like to see and PFF's Wide Receiver Efficiency Rating (WRER) bares this out.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2016/02/02/fantasy-introducing-wide-receiver-efficiency-rating/

"Credit should be given to Ginn for getting open when he was asked to but I think the interesting takeaway here is that the Panthers’ receivers did much better than anticipated. Although none of them played more than 70 percent of the team’s snaps, the Panthers’ wide receivers were very efficient. One of the arguments that people have been using to vote Cam Newton for MVP is that he has had no weapons to work with on the outside. While none of these guys were established top weapons and probably would not have done as well if they played more often, they did quite well in limited time. Ginn finished fourth, Devin Funchess was 21st, Jerricho Cotchery was 55th, and Corey Brown was the only one who was underwhelming at 115th. Brown played the most but only a little bit more than Ginn, so this group averages out to a pretty good efficiency rating. "

Sure,  Brown has improved,  but depending upon how you look at it,  his ceiling is probably that of a depth player coming off the bench. This doesn't necessarily lend itself to roster security, especially with guys like Garrett who have measurables plus production coming out of college,  whose main issue may just be the need for coaching and experience.

Well, there is a reason he went undrafted, BUT he does looks interesting in my 8 minutes of youtube highlights.  What's going to determine his fate is going to be how well he can learn how to run a pro route tree (now that's something I pulled from some internet scout, here's your salt), and how he keeps his temper in check.  I saw several times where he was taunting a defensive player.  He might run a little too hot.  It would stink for him to get a 30 yard gain, but screw it up with an unsportsmanlike penalty.

But if he did work out, that would be pretty awesome.   Looks to me like Gman wants to build the tallest team in the NFL, like we could go play some basketball.  Then again, he did say big men allow you to compete.

He's a deep ball specialist and Cam can nail the deep ball. I'm expecting even more shots deep this year. Idk if that's a good thing or not because we definitely at times need those routes to be shorted and the ball to come out of Cam hands quicker

Keywords, "really good".

Anyways I was speaking to the more flashier positions like WR, which is the position of the player we are discussing. We aren't talking about OL. Think of a Victor Cruz type, I am a Philly Brown fan, but he isn't anywhere near that discussion until he can be more consistent, and we don't know if he can stay healthy yet either. Time will tell obviously.

For the playing time brown got as a starter last year he really wasn't that productive. Put it this way if he played defense people on here would be talking about a cut or replacement

Isn't this always the case on brown...some people looking for a cut or replacement.

    • Just chasing targets is a fools game. Chase averaged 85 yrds and .76 TDs per game his first year and 87.16 yrds, and .75 TD's per game his second year. Statistically the same. NOT an improvement. Puka saw no increase either. Yes, Waddle's went down because he had to share targets with another receiver - just like TMac will have to share targets with Coker next year so you have actually just made my point concerning Coker. Olave saw an increase in targets but Carr replaced Dalton and even with the increase in targets, his production was pretty flat (83 extra yards and 1 more TD for the entire year). And Wilson's number did increase but the Jets replaced the other two receivers and their contribution was significantly down from Davis's and Moore's. Again, nothing in those numbers should lead anyone to believe there will be a big leap for Tmac next year.
    • See my previous post. You're also leaving out that T-Mac was likely hitting a rookie wall, like 95% of rookies do late in their first season, combined with the added attention on him by defenses, which in turn would be why Bryce looked Coker's way down the stretch.  With Coker playing like that to start next year, defenses will have to pay attention to it, which will then also make things easier for T-Mac. All of which is also ignoring that T-Mac will just be a better player next year than he was this year, assuming he works on his game this offseason, which we all know he will be.  If a player who was already your clear cut #1 comes back even better his next season, you're going to make sure you're throwing it his way more often, no matter who else you have. Again, Coker's added targets won't be at the expense of T-Mac's, they will BOTH be taking targets from the rest of the team.  Not to mention, we should be passing it more next year to begin with, seeing as we'll have both of them hopefully ready to go full speed Week 1, which again, will help both their target totals increase. Coker looks like a really good player, but even the most optimistic person can't say he looks like he has #1 potential, he has very solid to maybe even high end #2 potential.  You're not taking targets away from the reigning OROY who looks like a true Top 15 WR already to get your #2 targets, you increase both of them by taking from the others.
