We need offensive tackles. That is our weakness right now. The two that we got are serviceable but some how we need an upgrade at that position.

I guess this will be the canned response anytime Gettleman signs a non-tackle.

Responses like this - especially this part of the offseason, when anyone signed most likely won't even make it past the first cuts - make no sense.

But don't stop crying about it though.

Most of us clamoring for tackles are not talking about an upgrade for Oher, Remmers & Williams.  They're all servicable.  But the problem is there is not any backup behind them.

Imagine a scenario where Remmers gets injured and has to miss 2 - 3 games...  So, we put in Williams.  Who then is your backup tackle?

Behind Oher, Remmers & Williams we have guys with either NO NFL experience at tackle, or VERY BAD experience (Foucault) at tackle.

It's a BACKUP many of us are crying for.  Doesn't have to be great, just better than what we've got, which is pretty much nothing.

If we lose a starting OT, we have William (or Remmers if Williams wins the starting job).

If we lose a *second* starting OT, our season would be well and truly screwed no matter the amount of non-starting, merely adequate, backup tackles we have on the roster.  I would imagine in that case, they'd just slide a guy outside from the inside and plug in a backup in the middle.

Thats why we have to start drafting quality players that can step up like Klien did for Luke. Gotta be 2 move ahead

At this point, every time we try to figure out what is going on, or get stoked about a new pick up, they go and shuffle the deck again.

I think I'm going to just sit back and watch until we get to training camp. Something tells me there will be a few more shuffles yet to come.

Someone pass the popcorn.

Gman spoke of this in his presser a few weeks ago.

He spoke of how tough it was chosing the last 5 roster players 85-90.

He mentioned how Belicheat kept that part of the roster fluid.........

trying to find that diamond in the rough type player.

Id expect things to be quite interesting moving forward...........lots of competition.

There are 32 teams in the NFL, and right this moment, they all have 90 players on their payroll.

Anyone who's still unemployed as of now has been deemed not good enough to make a 90 man roster by 32 different GMs, including our own.

They've effectively been judged to be not as good as a little under 2900 other players, a solid percentage of whom are really only camp bodies anyway.

Do you really think there are upgrades to be found in that pool?

Look across the rosters for every other team in the league and you'll find a similar story.

I doubt any team is four deep with solid players. Heck, a good many probably aren't even three deep.

That's today's NFL.

No shot to make the squad, but he's got the speed and return abilities to make a few plays in OTAs/camp if he were to stick around

Sounds to me that we're actively trying out speedsters for our PS to find a guy who can become a PR next year if/when we lose Ted Ginn.

We do have a quality player who can step up at OT (as I said, either Remmers or Williams, whichever of the 2 isn't the starter).

Who will be free agent along with Oher if contracts don't get exteneded next season, we should avoid having a "revolving door".  Its not like injury just happen to one player we could lose  both OTs or OT & OG . We should have well rounded OL like Dallas when the team runs 50% time  have the best dual threat QB with a top 5 RB. The interior is solid but we need to build the outside.

IMO we are going to double dip on OTs next draft.

Yeah, both Oher and Remmers are playing well, but I don't see any team giving either a jackpot payday to get them away from us. As a restricted FA if someone had REALLY wanted Remmers this year, they could have taken him (though it would have taken a 2nd round pick beacuse that was the tender on him if memory serves). So obviously no team in the league considers Remmers worth a 2nd rounder or they would have signed him this year.

And I can't imagine anything but maybe HUGE money tearing Oher away from Matsko again.

Gettleman just may double-dip at OT if he considers the draft pool deep in OT talent. But I guarantee you he won't if he doesn't. If its a very very shallow well of OT talent, he probably wouldn't draft an OT at all if we're still picking at the bottom of every round.

So, here's the burning question.  What nicknames will the two Byrds on the WR corps have to distinguish them?  Given the size difference, one could think the new Byrd could go by Big Byrd....  and maybe Damiere is Road Runner?!

Ha ha! Big Byrd.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
