8. Ron Rivera, Panthers

The Panthers were patient with Rivera as he went through some growing pains over the first few years of his head coaching career, and he’s repaid the organization. His biggest strength is developing young defensive talent. Despite all of the turnover in the secondary over the last few seasons, the defense is still one of the best units in the league. And Rivera deserves a lot of credit for not trying to turn Cam Newton into more of a traditional quarterback.

I can understand a couple of those above Rivera, like Tomlin and Belichik who have won multiple Super Bowls.

I can even give them a pass on ranking him below those like Harbaugh, Carroll, and (lord help me) Payton because they all do wear a Super Bowl ring.

But Mike Zimmer?

Bruce Arians?

WTF have they accomplished outside of losing in the playoffs? (In the case of Arians, losing in the playoffs TWICE to Ron Rivera.)

I don't understand the infatuation the media has with Arians. He has literally been anointed in Arizona for wearing a cool hat.

Dont get me wrong, I think he is a very good coach, but it's not like he took a 2-14 team to the playoffs three straight years or won 15 games in a season.

Arians get too much hype IMO largely because people enjoy his BS persona.  Don't get me wrong, he is a good coach but overhyped.

also, I don't care if Tomlin has rings.  Last few years he hasn't been a very good coach.

I agree 100% about Tomlin.

All I'm saying is if your grade is heavily influenced by Super Bowl rings, well, he's got a lot of influence.

Mike Zimmer is a real head scratcher, Zimmer may be getting a lot of love because of what he's done with the Vikings who have been horrible for years, but Ron didn't exactly inherit a dream scenario at the time he started here, though luke and Cam did help a lot.

Isn't USA Today the publication that mocked The Panthers and NFL for The Thanksgiving match up against their beloved Cowgirls? Yeah... fug 'em. I could care less what USA Today writes or thinks.

Lol that whole thing is hilarious in retrospect.  Can't remember if it was USA Today or not, but that article and those Cowboy fans talking poo about "being forced" to watch the Panthers on Thanksgiving and how it should be reserved for a "real" team.

Fast forward to Thanksgiving and we're easily the best team in the league and we mop the floor with them.

As much as I hate Billicheat his numbers you can't argue with.  Rivera at minimum, is equal to Carroll.

Harbaugh is good but his teams lately have been so so.  Loved what he did with SS though.

Tomlin - average since Dick LaBeau left

Payton - Why cause he is a Bill Parcells disciple? RR has made Payton his bitch.

Zimmerman - He just took over the Vikings, how can you say he is top five after a season or two

Arians - Outstanding Coach but not nearly as good as Rivera.

Ron has grown as a head coach and continues to get better but let's not forget and should be part of the discussion (especially if you are using Zimmerman which as to be based partly on what he did as an assistant) that RR has had a stellar defense everywhere he has been.  Chicago, San Diego and of course Carolina. Rock solid defense everywhere he has gone.
