USA Today ranks the NFL head coaches

Arians gets "cool points" for his hat and his beatnik look. These days, in the eyes of many, "cool" is more important than "competent". Won't deny he's legitimately a good coach, but nowhere near as good as his hype. I'd give him Dennis Green level for now.

Zimmer?  I think he's  good too. Heck, he was my favorite choice to coach the Panthers before they hired Rivera. That said, ranking him higher than Rivera at this point is definitely unjustified.

My big worry with Zimmer is that he's starting to remind me a little bit of Harbaugh (Jim, not John). The "hard ass" persona plays well as long as you're winning. If you start losing though, that kind of act can cause players to bail on you. Heck, even if you keep winning, it wears on guys after a while.

Get your facts strait bub...

In 2014 (the year your mentioning) they won 11 games.... 8 of which they won before he lost his quarterback "and half his defense" with his backups they were 3 and 5.

Palmers career lmao!? I'm betting his delhomme esque meltdown will be the beginning of his end.

Eh they lost 7 starters......

FYI Palmer only played in 6 games and didn't finish one so he was basically played 5 games.

Isn't USA Today the publication that mocked The Panthers and NFL for The Thanksgiving match up against their beloved Cowgirls? Yeah... fug 'em. I could care less what USA Today writes or thinks.

Bruce Arians built that team from hand and has zero talent, that's why he is such a good coach.

In his first season all he had was

Carson Palmer

Larry Fitzgerald
Michael Floyd

Calais Campbell

Darnell Dockett

Karlos Dansby

Daryl Washington

Patrick Peterson
Yeremiah Bell

Tyrann Mathieu

Who could win with that?

Arians has been Christened largely in part to how well he did as interim head coach with the Colts a few years back, when the HC had a cancer battle.

Hos stupid looking hats can help him keep tanking playoff spots "strategically and brilliantly".

Lord, I had forgotten that silliness.

I don't understand the infatuation the media has with Arians. He has literally been anointed in Arizona for wearing a cool hat.

Dont get me wrong, I think he is a very good coach, but it's not like he took a 2-14 team to the playoffs three straight years or won 15 games in a season.

Rivera didn't take a 2-14 team to the playoffs 3 straight years either. it's not like he just showed up and they made the playoffs.

It wasn't that long ago when we were all calling for his head

All of us? I distinctly remember not calling for his head or even his dismissal. Not saying I had all the confidence in the world in him, but I wasn't ready to dump him quite yet.

We currently have the pieces it takes to give Rivera the rep of a top rate coach, but it takes a good GM, a good owner, and obviously good players. Good coaches can be sabotaged from above or below.

With what Gettleman gave him to work with on offense in 2014

Please do explain, in detail, what more Gettleman could have "gave him to work with on offense" keeping in mind that this is the REAL world of the NFL with salary cap restrictions and not Madden 2015 on your XBox.

With what Gettleman gave him to work with on offense in 2014, it is a legitimate miracle they somehow made the playoffs. The dude made lemonade out of lemons.

The team had a lot to do with the turnaround in Dec. of that season. Rivera and staff didn't make any genius coaching changes. They told the team that they were on the right path. That winning streak was a concerted effort by both players and Rivera, and luckily the rest of the division sucked.

If memory serves, they went younger on a couple of spots in the defense, and made 1 or 2 key offensive line changes.  Might not sound like much, but little things like that can be the difference between winning and losing.
