Would the Panthers need to make room to keep Damiere?

Like I said in another thread, I believe you can have everything you want/need out of the WR combination you suggested.  I don't feel there's much redundancy at all with those five guys, other than Ginn/Byrd being pure speed.  KB and Funch aren't redundant.  They're completely different receivers, other than being tall.  Philly is nothing like Ginn/Byrd, as he looks more agile than fast.  His out routes can break ankles.

I'd like to keep both Norwood and Byrd, so I hope they keep 6 WR's this year. KB, Funch, Ginn, Brown, Byrd, Norwood. Stash Bersin on the PS, and if one of the kept WR's gets dinged up, call him up. At this point, Hill and Garret are on the outside looking in, and I'd let them go. We'll see what happens preseason, though.

While it is tempting to lump Byrd, Brown, and Ginn all under the same “deep threat” category, it probably is not all that accurate. Damiere Byrd and Ted Ginn can safely be labeled as such, but Philly Brown is a different story.

At 5’11 and 200 pounds, Philly is more than simply a deep threat to stretch the field. For someone that is considered a “small receiver”, he really isn’t all that small. In fact, he is bigger than both Antonio Brown and Odell Beckham Jr, two outstanding receivers who make plays in a variety of ways. In that same way, Philly is capable of lining up on the outside and making plays closer to the line of scrimmage. He isn’t simply a deep threat.

Glad you point this out, been wondering what areas of the field Byrd is really doing his work in.

Philly is hard to really relate to another WR. He's got pretty good quickness and speed but not tops at either. He can pretty much threaten any part of the field. I think Philly is better suited to run option routes than anyone on the team and that type of connection is what makes Tom Brady and Rodgers so hard to stop.

I also totally agree on the point about Ginn being safe, but in all likelihood this is his last season and if we have the heir apparent deep threat we need to keep him.

At this point, I am not sure Garrett is even in the conversation to be on the practice squad. He hasn't looked good at all.

I know you said that he dropped a pass, but is it really a situation of him looking bad, or just not getting the reps with the first or second team? Honestly, have you really been looking that closely?

As for Byrd, I don't think he has to take another veteran receiver's spot. It's still early yet, but I think it's safe to assume that  KB, Funch, Ginn and Brown are locks. With Hill and KG out of the picture (the pretenders), that easily leaves a spot for Damiere or Norwood (and maybe both). People like Dickson, Simonson, Whitaker, and Love might be in more peril.

It's still early though. Versatility, or the lack thereof, will either be someone's savior or bane. Be sure to take it into account when you consider your next roster projections.

Can't believe Hill is an afterthought after being so highly talked about all offseason and last week during the first few days of camp.

What gives?

Byrd apparently started camp poorly and has finally put together a couple good days. Happy for him, but I don't see why he is an option over Hill at this juncture.

Ultimately we need the games to be played to see who the pretenders are.

You should learn to believe it.  One of the Huddle's (and I'm sure every other fan forum in existence) favorite offseason activities is to hype up players who haven't done jack poo in the NFL. I'm not saying they NEVER pan out the way we hope, but more often than not, they don't end up making much of an impact at all.

Don't sleep on Bersin. All the talk about finding a Cotch replacement and hardly anyone is mentioning Bersin. All the dude does is run nice routes and catch everything that's thrown his way. If Cam hits him in the hands he is going to catch it. Period. We don't need him to be an athletic freak. We just need him to move the chains when his number is called.
And he's proven he can do that.

KB

Funch

Ginn

Philly

Byrd (Future Ginn replacement)

Bersin

Bersin is still in it, but the idea that we need a WR to be the "sure handed one" isn't how it works. We don't bring in a different WR to pick up the third down...

Ginn and Olsen caught more passes on third down than Cotchery.

Yes, and he isn't looking good at all, even when playing against the third string D. I am pulling for him, he needs to pick it up.

I didn't say anything about 3rd down?

Bersin's best routes are the same type of routes Cotch ran last year. The deep post, slant, and crossing routes.

Move the chains, third down, it's all the same. Why would you put Bersin in over any of the other WRs?

This isn't last year's offense. KB and Funchess developing change it significantly.

Am I the only one who believes Kevin Norwood's skill set slots nicely between Big Beasts (KB and Funch) and Speed Racers (Ginn and Philly)?

I was hoping we'd draft Norwood out of Bama. Kid impressed me in colllege. He hasn't had much of a shot in the NFL the last few years but so far this training camp I've been impressed again.  Like I said in another thread, he reminds me of a stronger, younger, faster Cotchery. And, to me, that would be a valuable asset to this WR corps.

You're not alone. He was on fire at practice Monday (not sure what he's done prior to or after), I see him being valuable, but not sure how he makes the top 5. I see his main competition as Hill and Philly. Since people are calling Philly a probable lock, I think that even if he beats out Hill (which is looking more and more like a possibility), we'd have to keep 6 for him to make the roster. Most likely, he's PS unless Philly gets hurt...which is already Bersin's role.

If we're going to remain a top offense we will need to be be moving the chains on first and second down more often than third.

Why would I put in Bersin? Well let's just say we're 2nd and goal from the 8 yard line. We've got Kelvin split out wide running a fade and we've got Funch opposite side running an out route or a post to the goal post. Who do I want in the slot running my dig/slant? Do I want Ted butter finger Ginn coming across the middle trying to haul in a Cam missile? Philly is on the sideline he's out of breath from hauling in a 45 yard bomb 2 plays prior. Seems like a perfect time for Ron to call on his sure handed sunshine.
