Ron Rivera talks to MMQB's Albert Breer re: Sustaining Success

Good 5 minute video at MMQB today.  Albert Breer interviews Ron Rivera on his expectations for this season, how to sustain success.

He also asks Ron about where Cam is at (and his reputation) post-SB loss... that Q is kind of annoying, but Ron's answer is good.

How can any of us not love having Rivera as our head coach? He is such a smart man, not just with football but with life. He seeks out those he can learn from, understands how social media impacts perceptions, expects the best from his players & gives back his best to them, does everything he can to have his team succeed. Thank you, Mr. Richardson!!

I like that Rivera is hard nosed, yet a players coach. I like how he holds everyone on the team; including himself, accountable for their actions.  I remember it was a preseason post game speech, and he was telling the guys hes not going to keep you if he feels you hurt this team. Great coach

Besting Denver tomorrow night won't change anything from the Superbowl. It won't stop the questions from it.

Tomorrow night is a regular season game.

Well said. Cam could win the Super Bowl, save a kitten from a burning building all in the same night and still get pooed on.

Mr. Richardson is not the one who hired him. You need to thank someone else for Ron Rivera.

Also, he was not speaking about social media's impact on perceptions. You may want to rewatch that part. Here is the quote:

(Regarding Cam) "Some peoples' motivations worry me. It really does. Are they really, you know, because of what they see or what they think they see? Or is there another reason? Is there an ulterior motive? And that does [worry me], I mean we're in the year 2016 and yet we still have social issues that we have to worry about."

Guest Barry McCaulkinor

You're down right ignorant if you think that Jerry Richardson didn't have anything to do with hiring and later retention of Ron Rivera.

You are such a downer jerk trip. Nobody else but Mr. Richardson hired Rivera. No one.

And when I mentioned his recognition of social media, I was not responding only to that interview. He has brought it up several different ways since 2011 & it wasn't always about Newton.

Just trying to give you the truth.

Hiring Ron Rivera was AGAINST the reservations of JR. JR favored Perry Fewell as the new head coach. This is common knowledge to anyone with the team in 2011 and 2012. Richardson wanted Rivera fired during the 2012 season because he believed the coaching staff was holding back the team, Fewell winning the SB as the Giants DC to end the 2011 season did not help Hurney's cause to fight for Rivera. Hurney was fired primarily because he hired Ron Rivera and refused to fire him mid season.

You can thank Hurney for hiring Ron Rivera, and you can thank Hurney for falling on the sword and leaving the team to give a young QB, LB, and coach more time to learn and achieve success. Hurney believed in the foundation of the team that much. Hurney could have kept his job if he had terminated Ron Rivera. GMs do not get fired mid season. Coaches get fired mid season. However, when Hurney tied the team to Rivera, Cam, and Luke by leaving the team during the season, the team had to finish the season out on a week to week evaluation per JR. They were unable to make any major moves like firing a coach without a GM in place.

Just dropping some knowledge. Some research will verify these accounts (preferably primary research).

You got any source for those claims?

Unless of course the major issue with the team is that the GM handed out some CRAZY deals to multiple guys who then do not live up to them.

GM and Coach pairings get fired regularly. Most recently, if I'm not mistaken, was both the Dolphins and the Titans.

More to the point new GMs almost always clean slate once they get in. Ours didn't, and it's not totally known how much of that was because his owner didn't want him to.

Sources? I lived it.

There is nothing I can link since it is not an online source. I am sure if I, or you, did some quick and dirty research we could find other sources online that confirm. No time to dig now. omw to a couple meetings and the game in a few hours. Maybe later.

They do not fire GMs for that in the season. Typical protocol, and we know how JR is for protocol.

Coaches are fired mid season or at the end of the season. Depends on how bad the team is doing. A GM does not leave with the coach in the middle of the season.

Now if a GM is fired, they are terminated following the season prior to the HC search that will immediately follow for the new GM. Everything is typically lined up during the season with a GM search, but the current GM is not removed during the season since teams are unable to hire a new one during the season to carry the previous regime's bags. Interim GMs are not around like an interim HC. At best, a team gets a consultant to lead the search for a GM during the season, but this consultant does not get involved with the team management.

Gettleman was not allowed to make any major changes to the team in 2013. Rivera was still on a week to week evaluation basis for 2013. Gettleman was allowed, during the 2013 season, to set up a list of new coaching candidates and begin background checks for a possible coaching change for the 2014 season. Hurney made a strong request that Rivera, Cam, and Luke be given more time to develop together as the foundation of the team.
