We saw what happened with a concussed Case Keenum last year, when protocol was somehow forgotten in the staggering decision the Rams made to keep him under center. We heard from Newton last year too, when he complained about absorbing punishment that other quarterbacks don't have to take.

He didn't have to say anything Thursday night after Graham Gano's missed 50-yard field goal in the closing seconds gave Denver a 21-20 victory. As football coaches love to point out, the film never lies. And the film shows the Broncos hitting Newton's head at least four times and getting away with it.

"I feel s----y," Newton said in his postgame news conference. He had his reasons. Brandon Marshall launched himself into Newton's face, and Von Millerdelivered his own helmet-to-helmet hit too, one that looked less like a launch, but was a clear shot nonetheless. The quarterback stayed in there and weathered it all, making some gutsy plays to give Gano the chance he couldn't convert.

Newton is a tough guy, you know, and as a 6-foot-5, 245-pounder who runs like a tailback, the refs allow defenders to take liberties against him that they don't permit against more fragile and less mobile quarterbacks.

It has to stop. Not tomorrow, today. Everyone around the league likes and respects Gene Steratore, the referee who worked this game, including Newton.

But does anyone truly believe Steratore would've allowed pocket passers Tom Brady or, say, the now-retired Peyton Manning to take multiple shots to the head without penalizing the offending opponents? And on the one personal foul Steratore did call against Stewart, does anyone truly believe the ref would've called intentional grounding on Brady or Manning when it was so clear the approaching illegal hit inspired the throwaway?

"It's not my job to question the officials," Newton said. "I really like this officiating crew, so I know it wasn't something they did intentionally. ... But it's not fun getting hit in the head."

It isn't fun and it isn't fair. In fact, it's three country miles removed from fair.

The more attention the better as far as I am concerned, considering there is 15 games left to play.

Yes.

Which is why IMO Coach Rivera needs to get on a damn soapbox.

Not "we sent the tape into the league office for evaluation".  That "behind closed doors" bullpoo won't do a damn thing to change this clear double-standard.

Well we have been victims of locally televised games for a long time but not anymore. When the MVP of the league take blow after blow to the head and nothing is done. Well now that's a storyline. Hope it keeps growing until they release the Cam Newton rule.

Interesting stat provided by (holy moly, yet again) ESPN:

ESPN Stats and Information

The penalty called against Darian Stewart on Thursday was the first time there was a roughing-the-passer penalty called against a Panthers opponent with Cam Newton at quarterback since Week 11 of the 2014 season against the Falcons.

Wrap your head around that.

For TWENTY SEVEN consecutive games (including playoff games) and as much as he has been hit, Cam Newton hasn't earned a single roughing-the-passer call.

Anyone still doubt that Hochuli told Cam "You're not old enough to get that call"?

That is just...wow, I mean I knew they let Cam get hit a lot without penalties, but damn that is just... I don't have words for how fuged that is.

Is that true? That seems like it can't be true. Man. Just...man. That's fugged up. The refs need to evolve and everyone sees it. Maybe the silver lining is that he will now get calls. I sure hope so.

Man, that can't be true. Smh.

Well yes and no....they blame the panthers first lol....nothing from the Panthers was incorrect nor did/does Newton have a concussion so why would we pull him from the game.

Targeting will happen more if these idiots think people should be removed just from a hit with no signs of dizziness or staggering or confusion. NEwton stayed down on purpose that hit, because he was hurt and because he was trying to draw some god damn flags...not because he was concussed.

This is the spin though...it's our fault lol.

That article literally just said "oh the horror" "they won't stop hitting Cam in the head and they aren't throwing flags so remove him for the love of god remove him"

like....rofl
