First, the article:

Quote

When officials let the Broncos get away with that first hit, they set the game on slippery ground, as the Broncos were then incentivized to continue going at Newton’s dome. Newton managed to make all manner of plays when his offensive line afforded him sufficient time, so the Broncos set out to make the most of any chance they got. Unfortunately, this turned into repeat attempts to turn Cam Newton’s brain into jelly. If they were trying to knock him out of the game, they almost succeeded.

Now the comments:

If he doesn’t want to get hit in the head, maybe he shouldn’t wear a helmet. He’s just asking for it when he’s dressed like that.

This was called, right? Please tell me this was called.

Leaving his feet for a shot at Newton’s head. Disgraceful.

Be reasonable man. You only get ejected for doing serious things twice. Like jumping up and down near an opponent after your team scores.

Well, Tom Brady is special. You shouldn’t even be allowed to look at Tom Brady, let alone soil his jersey.

The solution to this kind of poo really isn’t that hard. When the NBA got tired of bench clearing brawls they put in a rule that says if a player even leaves the bench area during a fight, BOOM automatic suspension and fine.....The same with the NHL......As a result you hardly ever see bench clearing altercations anymore.

I know this is crazy talk but how about the NFL come out with a policy that says any play that is deemed launching or leading with the crown of the helmet, which are subject to review after the game is over, is an automatic 2 game suspension and fine.....no if, and, or buts.

And if a team is guilty of it on a constant basis than make a rule that says the HC will be suspended for X amount of games as well.

Of course the NFL has never been accused of being to act in a swift and decisive fashion for the protection of it’s players.

But mess around with a ball’s air pressure.........Boy they’re going to put your balls in a vice and squeeze.

yeah the ppl critical of all things cam are too busy making america great again in the yahoo news comments to bother with a sports story at the moment

believe me they are still around. saw a guy blaming the NFL's helmets for being too dangerous, not the players launching themselves and leading with their helmets.

Not that it would ever happen but if the NFL came out and suspended Marshall and Stewart for a game and fined Miller and Barret for hits to Cams head this type of poo would stop. It would send a clear message and Cam would finally get some protection. But who am I kidding. We've all been saying "maybe they will finally protect Cam now that X has happened" since he came into the league and instead of getting better it's only getting worse.

In my mind, the fix for this kind of thing is pretty easy.  If a player loses playing time due to injury from a play deemed intentional by the NFLPA (the League will continue to levy its own punishment), the offending player has two options:

1) Offending player will be suspended for all games that injured player is unable to play.

2) Offending player can continue to play games, but will remit pay for all games played to the injured player.

This will work because of a number of factors:

  • If a player is injured to the point of ending his career, suspension for life or play for life with no pay.
  • If a player is good enough to continue to play in spite of their egregious history, teams will be far less likely to continue taking chances on those types of players.
  • Player accountability to each other is severely escalated rather than having the league be the sole arbiter of how penalties are laid out.
  • The players' union takes a much more active role in the well-being of their members.  I think Joe Public would be surprised at how harshly players would police themselves for these kinds of issues.

This way, the sport can maintain its own integrity while letting those most affected by reckless play and unsportsmanlike conduct get a swift kick in the ass by those guys most in the know about how these this affect them, personally.

It's so fuging obvious how bad it was.  In the corporate setting, this would be the definition of stepping on someone to get a promotion.  They were essentially trying to ruin a person's career for ONE (1) win.

NFL bends to money, and if UA, Gatorade, and Panthers brass [combined with the media] get in on it, we should get some pretty decent momentum on this.

I predicted the Broncos would be able to bring sledgehammers on the field to hit Cam and I was basically right, the NFL is a joke when it comes to consistency. I can't decide if it's just favoritism or a dislike of Cam but this poos been going on since day 1.

I learned yesterday that taunting will get you tossed while targeting will get you a free cheap shot.
