Is Gettleman still "the man"?

The book is still out on Gettleman. As a contract negociator/cap manager, yes, he has been excellent. But our stars are almost exclusively Hurney guys (posible exception for KK).

Before anyone says that Star and/or KB belong in that category, be honest with yourselves.

Hurney had the stars but couldn't built around them. Gettleman put the panthers in position to win a Super Bowl.

Rent Norman for a year, leave Coleman at FS, sign Weddle in FA to play SS, sign Russell Okung for OT, draft 2 DEs (Emmanuiel Ogbah/Shilique Calhoun), 1 CB (Brandon Williams), 1 WR (Tajae Sharpe), 1 S (Jayron Kearse), and 1 DT (Michael Pierce).

That is what I wanted, and that, or something similar, could have been done.

The moves in the off season weakened the team. It was 2014 all over again. Now, we need to hope the Panthers figure this out with their personnel problems sometime this season, and that the rest of the NFC South struggles. It appears the Panthers are building this team for future seasons, and not to win now.

It's easy to make a mock draft after the fact.

That is at least debatable.

I agree DG has done a good to great job finding role players at good value.

The jury is still out on most of our draft picks. Many look like they could develop into very good players, but with the possible exception of KK, and maybe TT, none have yet been as good as Cam, Luke, TD, Olsen, Kalil, Norman, or Stewart.

So I'm not ready to give him a blank check yet.

yea gettleman is one of the best things to happen to us but hes not perfect . he is great at drafting and finding talent but hes too tough when it comes to contract negotiations . i hate to be a downer but just picture how good we would be with mike mitchell at safety  norman and bradberry at corner with bene in the slot .

Hurney had all those players too but the team didn't win. There was a grantland article about the state of the panthers after the giants tnf game that explains everything, compare that with Gettleman's 4 year moves.

I think he's a very good GM, probably top 5. That being said, I wasn't crazy about how this offseason went. We entered the offseason with almost no free agents and a ton of cap space yet we somehow left with less talent overall. Much of it was just circumstance and not really DG's fault, Norman threatening to hold out, the draft falling really bad for us, ect.

But still, I think we could have done better. I think we got a little too complacent after posting a 17-2 record, but in the NFL if you're not getting better, you're getting worse.

I'm worried about Gettleman. He's been with us a good enough amount of seasons now so he should've already had his poo together. He made many mistakes this offseason and got too arrogant. The NFL is always changing. You can't stay the same course going into the next season and that's what we did. The league has tape on us and it's the same as last year. I hope DG can learn from his mistakes, but like I said he should've already had his poo together and if he doesn't at this point, it worries me.

Agree 100%

The last off season was as bad as it gets. Norman was an unavoidable loss, but the rest is on Gettleman. He refused to spend any money on free agents, even the mid priced ones. The draft was terrible. We needed an offensive draft. Our first three picks should have been TE, WR and OT in some order. We didnt upgrade and while blessed with Stewart having good health last year, we don't have a true NFL RB left on the roster. The lack of explosive playmakers is 100% on Gettleman.

    • Taking only players from the sheet that are realistically available in or after the listed round, I’d like… 1st: DT Caleb Banks (Styles not realistic) 2nd: LB Jacob Rodriguez 3rd: OT Best available from Bowry, Barber, and Casey 4th: CB Daylen Everette 5th: S Jalen Huskey 6th: RB Adam Randall 7th: IOL Best available from Lemieux, Dawkins, Leausa, and Brose   I know nothing about some of the players listed, but it seems like that would be the best way it could fall for now. I’m sure the list of who we meet will change a ton, and there will also be players we don’t meet with to keep quiet. I’d love to pick up Randall in the late rounds.
    • Not what I said. They know within the building why we aren't utilizing TEs more. If the rumors were true that we were seriously pursuing a couple of decent receiving TEs that strongly points toward a lack of quality receiving TEs currently on the roster. Does that mean we consider drafting one at 19? I don't know, but it wouldn't shock me and if we did there's only one guy it would be. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see TE drafting somewhere in the first three rounds.
    • Yeah, I don’t know. Tepper was behind the Bryce selection. Behind firings and hiring over his lack of development.  He doesn’t have to literally tell them their hands are tied for them to know this. It is in the air constantly. The Canales Bryce play calling was even portrayed by more than one person as Canales failing Bryce, instead of Bryce being responsible for his own performance (except when he does well, then it is all him). Now they have an extra coach in, to help the new OC get results from this QB.  The atmosphere is not welcoming to prototypical young QBs that have talent. You get Jake Plummer types or old vets. I think we are stuck.
