I'm not willing to call it yet

It's 4 weeks into the season and we're 1-3. Things don't look good. The team doesn't look like the team they were last year and no one knows why. It's not just any one thing, it's not just any two things, the team just looks like Crap all around. Cam has no time in the pocket to make throws, and when he does, he's missing open receivers and making terrible decisions. He has been beaten and abused all year and he isn't helping himself by trying to coast into the end zone without paying attention. Now he is concussed putting the season into further jeopardy. The Defense has no push on the line in the slightest and it finally culminated in what happened yesterday when our secondary had to go up against a decent QB.

But again, it's week 4. We've been here before. Once in 2013 and again the next year in 2014. We looked just as bad, if not worse then. But will we come back from a poo start to win the division? Will we do it again? I don't really know. Not the way they've been playing. But until the fat lady sings, we're still in it. Right now Atlanta is our only competition for the division, and Shannahan has a LONG history of being a terrible second half of the season O coordinator, whereas we have a LONG history of being a great second half of the year team under Rivera. The secondary, while inexperienced, has looked serviceable up until yesterday. If the pass rush can turn it on, we can win because it will take the pressure off of them. If the Offensive line starts giving our QBs a chance to throw the ball and in turn they make good decisions with the football, we can win.

So for those sitting here bragging about how right they are this week, good for you. I hope you're happy that you're right. With how shitty this team has looked, we're all looking for some silver lining to feel happy about. I can't really blame you for trying to polish the turd that is the first quarter of the 2016 season and if gloating about being right this week about not having Norman, or not signing that one free agent, or how Gettleman has doomed us long term, please do so if it makes you happy. Congratulations, you win the "I'm so smart " award. This week. Just know the season isn't over yet and I'm not willing to call the season a waste until we're mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. It's a long season and each week is a different game. For all we know, the defense will turn around next week and set the single game record for turnovers just for shits and giggles. We look that bipolar this year so it wouldn't surprise me. We might have Derek "Buc Fucker" Anderson in at QB this week against... Oh look at that, the Bucs.

So I'm not panicking. I'm not freaking out yet. I am concerned, mightily so, but I'm not about to have a meltdown. I'm going to wait this storm out because even if this year is a lost one, I still think we're in a good position to compete long term. We still have the pieces in place in Luke, TD, Cam, Olsen, KB, etc. For whatever reason things just aren't clicking right now. I have been a harsh critic of Rivera's in the past but he somehow manages to pull his teams together and pull wins out of his ass when things look the bleakest. I'm not ready to call the season a waste. Not yet.

But if we lose to the Bucs then I'll totally be in "fug it" mode.

Good post.

I won't be in "f it" mode if we lose next week, but I will be extremely concerned.

THERE TWO WAYS AROUND THIS , EITHER WE NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES AND JUST FOLD THE SEASON , OR WE MAKE SOME CHANGES AND GO ON A WIN STREAK AND USE THIS LOSS AS MOTIVATION . I STILL CANT BELIVE WE WENT FROM BEING THE MOST DOMINATE TEAM IN YEARS TO A TERRIBLE TEAM . I PUT THIS ON GETTLEMAN HE DID THE SAME BS IN 2013 STRIPPING US AFTER A GREAT YEAR AND HE HAS DONE THE SAME THIS OFFSEASON , HE HAS HURT US MORE THEN DONE GOOD IDC HOW GOOD HE DRAFTS HES NO BETTER THAN THAT BUM HURNEY

"Gettleman is the greatest GM to ever grace the game, he never misses on draft picks, and he's shrewd with money too! Plus those shorts!"

Gettledouche is the worst GM to ever grace the game and needs to be fired! The guy did nothing to draft our needs, he let the GOAT aka Josh Norman go for nothing, and he thinks our O-line is any where near competent which is ridiculous! Plus those shorts!"

I like to believe I and many others exist in the middle of these two somewhere but I'm having trouble finding many of them online today.

Agree. Lose next week and we're in real trouble but season isn't over. Lose the next two and we are done.

This is the worst meltdown I've ever seen on this board...and I've seen some bad ones. This 15-1 ,team didn't turn into the Browns In 1 season. I refuse to believe it. We have a history of slow starts and turn around with Rivera. You don't think that can happen again. Atl started 5-0 last year then imploded. We spanked them 38-0. Did they give up and roll over? No they came back 2 weeks later and beat us. 1 game doesn't make a season. This team still has the same core. Execution and coaching has been bad and our cocky attitude is gone. The season isn't over until we are mathematically eliminated. 2014 should of taught you that. So if you don't have faith jump ship, you people have made this board insufferable lately. Buck up , stop crying, and keep pounding

Not so sure about that. There were a large number of classic meltdowns on the old Huddle boards. The fact that the servers couldn't handle it after bad losses were a blessing in disguise.

This morning, I had to remind myself about the 2010 season and how things could be so far worse. We might be struggling mightily right now but I like to believe that if we get back to playing how we're capable of playing, we'll have a chance. You couldn't say that six years ago

One last thing but I also told myself that in the end, the only thing I have control over is whether I will continue being a fan. Well, if I survived through 2010, then this is nothing.

    • THE WALKER BACKGROUND Here is where this gets weird.  Walker is a serviceable LT who could benefit from Gilbert's experience and coaching.  However, he is known for below-average run blocking and frequent penalties.  As you know, a penalty from a LT is a drive killer. A former 7th round pick, Walker has outperformed expectations, but he still ranks around the middle of the pack when compared to other tackles.  Having said that, it seems as if the Panthers are banking on Walker for a year and will then make a decision on Ickey.  In Green Bay, Walker was the starter, but the Packers weren't exactly sold on him. While most people think the oft-injured David Bakhtiari retired in 2023, he really wanted to keep playing.  He was released on March, 11, 2024.  Walker stepped in and took the reserve LT job from Nijman in that 2023 season, but they were close--probably because Nijman was more of a swing OT.  However, Nijman was a free agent in 2024, so the Panthers signed him just a week after Bakhtiari was released, leaving the Packers only Walker to play LT.  A month later, the Packers drafted a LT in the first round, Jordan Morgan out of Arizona.  Most Packer fans believe that Morgan would have beat out Walker for the LT job in 2024, but he had some shoulder injuries and went to IR after 6 games. In 2025, when the Packers had an injury at G during the season, instead of putting Morgan in at LT for Walker as planned, they played Morgan to guard because Walker can only play 1 position.  The Packers currently project Morgan back to LT for 2026, which is probably why they did not seek to retain Walker, at least in part. Based on this history, it is safe to say this: Walker is better than Nijman. We have the benefit of them being on the same team in a direct competition to help us see that. Walker is probably closer to Ickey, except for the penalties.  That bothers me a lot.  Bryce sucks when we get behind the sticks, and a run-first offense with a poor run-blocking LT is not ideal.   Regardless, I think Ickey and the Panthers find themselves in limbo right now, so the Walker deal comes at a perfect time for the GM.  Gilbert, perhaps, can work on the penalties and maybe a TE like Tremble can help offset the run blocking issues, so maybe we can actually stay the course at OT.  Maybe we do not draft a LT--maybe we draft a RT to groom behind Moton.  Maybe we draft a C.  At LT, the Panthers do not want to overreact, especially if Ickey returns to form or Walker demonstrates improvement.  Depth is certainly a concern, but a solid RT can be that depth.   I doubt the Panthers draft a LT in rounds one or maybe two.  It seems we have bigger needs at Will LB, DT, TE, and maybe S.
    • THIS! IF we go offense at 19, it should be the trenches, which is no longer a pressing need with Waler's signing. 3 biggest needs in 2026, IMO, are DT, FS, ILB. We need to upgrade our starters at those positions and I expect anyone rafted at 19 to start immediately. I could rationalize OT (right or left) or CB since we're an injury away from a severe drop off AND have huge offseason concerns at both next year. Unless Bryce plays a lot better, I want to upgrade QB next year so I could get behind locking in a 2027 starter this year if the right guy is there. You COULD argue NCB and TE are positions where we need to upgrade our starters, sure, but not at 19. Both positions can still be upgraded on day 2.
    • He's firmly a second rounder and I don't think we would go that high for a TE this draft.  Third?  Possibly. I mean Rhule drafted Tremble in the third round who clearly was just a blocking TE.
