Article: Dave Gettleman Has Destroyed The Carolina Panthers

I am a realistic fan that cares about the here and now and the direction of the team. I do not expect everyone to agree.

I was wrong last season. I saw the same problems with the secondary, but Norman was better than I thought, Tillman produced at a higher level, and Coleman blindsided me at FS. I do have to admit while I hated having Harper due to his coverage ability, I respect him for his leadership, communication on the field, and hard nosed play in the box.

I now believe Harper was the glue in that secondary. I missed that.

I was also glad/shocked to see Gettleman go after Jared Allen before the trade dead line. He should have addressed the DE position in the off season, but he stubbornly stuck by Ealy. Jared Allen moved my outlook from 8-8 with a division title in 2015 to 10-6. They still out performed my expectations.

Whether that was dumb luck or Gettleman planned it out, it worked out very well and led to Thieves Ave on the back of the already stellar LB play making ability.

Gettleman tossed all that out the window in one off season. Reminiscent of 2014.

Unfortunately, the Panthers have been worse than I expected this season. I did not see the secondary completely imploding, and I hoped for some improvement from Ealy so his play would be at least average on a consistent basis. I also thought Bene would be left at the nickel with McClain starting and the rookie CBs would rotate in at the other CB spot with Coleman covering their backside form the FS position. Moving Coleman to SS with Boston at FS backing up 2 rookies on both sides of the field was a big mistake.

Keep Rivera unless you have a seasoned HC with previous success in the NFL. A rookie HC would take at least 3 seasons to develop, and we would go through all the same growing pains. Keep McDermott. Replace Gettleman with Brandon Beane and replace Shula with Ricky Proehl or Dameyune Craig. Those changes would get things straight imo.

Now I know you are a moron. Dameyune Craig? the same craig that couldn't get the job at Auburn so he packed up his stuff and pouted all the way to LSU. What a clown comment.

i guess we all forgot how talentless the team was with marty hurney for like four years

The huddle misses the days of trading 1st round picks for 2nd/3rd round picks to fill a 'need'. Double dipping talent like McFua and paying a host of running backs top money.

Should he be penalized for that? Hurney over paid for every decent player he had which left the team in cap hell. Usually a guy that drafted consecutive ROy's a future MVP & DPOY would still be employed by that team but his overall draft record and cap management did him in.

Gettleman literally cleaned up his mess but he should be penalized for benefiting from Hurney's core.

I'm not penalizing him for benefiting. I'm penalizing him for not solidifying positions on this team. People underestimate Norman's value to our team last year greatly. Quarterbacks didn't even throw at him after a while last year. Let me say that again, he wasn't even being targeted. And now it's open season on our defense. How many game winning/saving plays did Josh make for this team last year? Either via interception, pass breakup, forced fumble, whatever. He was a playmaker and brought swagger to our secondary. Losing him was huge

hurney literally invested in like 6 players and then patched every other hole on this team with guys like deke cooper and tyler brayton

He tried to keep Norman he didn't sign the tag. hated to see him go but in the long term it could prove to be the right move like releasing Steve Smith.

Josh Norman is only one guy he can't play both sides, produce a pass rush and protect Cam.

Dude, some guy wrote in a blog that we need to fire our GM and that we suck. Yeah. Three hundred words, no sponsors and no one has heard of the guy.

Heck, for once this season, I saw a team make second half adjustments and claw their way back into a game.

There's problems, but I'm not for jettisoning the guys who rebuilt this team and got it to the Superb Owl last year. And that guy who wrote the blog, for all we know, is the OP. When the big name writers start calling for the GMs head (and I mean writers, not just talking heads and local market sports shock jocks) then I might pay it much attention.

    • I picked up too turdpiles from the same poster for saying basically I liked both Jake and Cam.  I tried to find where I had been negative and couldn’t see it. It was basically my most ‘fan’ posting in months, I thought. Innocuous approval of the guys behind our two best years. Could not make sense of it other to think that it was not okay with someone that I like both QBs.
    • They are not equal. But I didn’t believe either was worth that ridiculously desperate trade up.  I agreed with you then and still believe that now. We got horrible value for those assets.    Half the people here trashed the 2023 offense while overlooking that a coach they don’t think much of went 6-6 with them to finish 2022. You could have built on that.   Think about the picks lost and DJ too, and the additional investment in 2024 and the 1st this year and imagine all that still being done and having Darnold running it.  Then the 9th in 2023, the other 1st and two 2nds, you could have put them into the defense and still have had the massive offensive investment. Granted you would have altered the cap money you had for the guards by paying Darnold.  And tell me we wouldn’t have been so far ahead of where we are now….
