Smitty is the most interesting Panther ever, but I still think that Pep is in that argument as the "greatest" Panther ever.

Peppers won't ever receive the mantra of "greatest" from many panther fans due to the fact that on numerous occasions he just plain quit on the team. That and the ugly divorce between the two parties will permanently scar many fans from putting him up on Panther Mount Rushmore.

Well I'm not one of those fans. I never bought into the negativity about his motor, and the break-up is what it is. The FO was ultimately responsible for that, and no one is changing my mind about that situation.

As for Smitty, there was also a messy break-up (which again was driven by the FO), and that is what is. 89 was also talked about like a dog by many fans for his legitimate and illegitimate character flaws. Moreover, people had the audacity to question whether he was "done" or not. Sure, he has his injury history, but on the field he still produces at a high level to this very day.

All that being said, I feel that the ugly business side and all sideline and off-the-field stuff will fade over time, and history will be kind to both Smitty and Pep.

Smitty > Peppers and it's not even close. Has nothing to do with Peppers have the passion of Eeyore and Smitty bleeding Panther blue. Smitty is a HOFer, triple crown winner, offense shouldering for the better part of a decade player. Peppers never shouldered the defense, never led the league in anything, isn't as sure a HOFer, not as close to the top in any historical stat categories as Smitty.  Smitty WAS the Panthers while he was here (that's what ultimately led to his departure according to some), Peppers was never anything but that guy that was sometimes dominant and sometimes just kinda good.

Not trying to hijack this thread and make it about Peppers but come on man. You can be upset with the way his Panther career ended but anyone who says he's not a HOFer is trolling. He's probably even a 1st ballot HOFer
