The Patriots only spent 5 million more than us. But I thought spending money was good?

Patriots have literally the GOAT on their roster.  That helps.

Plus they are literally the only team that can lure people based on winning

Shoutout to Gettleman. Still don't agree with the Norman situation but we got money to blow and a very talented roster. Hopefully we can resign Short, Star and Addison and get this defense back in the top 5 so we can make another run. The backbone of this team is defense. That is our whole identity. We gambled this year and lost. Gettleman will make adjustments. KEEP Pounding

Barely above the cap requirement, smh. Based on the excess cash that were sitting on this season, we were out of cap hell this past offseason. That's money we could have used to help push us over the edge, and go all in for this season.

People keep mentioning we're building for the future. When do we stop worrying about the future, and focus on the present? Looking at this team now, it might be some years before we even get back to the Super Bowl.

I agree, but we will be back in the SB next year long as we address the position of need.

And they didn't have Hurney 4 years ago.

Hurney screwed us.

But for me, we are past where that can now be in play for what we do.  All teams have some poo and handicapping deals...we are no longer handcuffed.

Hurney at least left us with some comical good dudes.  Some other teams have been Hurnied and not had the talent...so it could of been worse

IMO we didn't really gamble.  It was pretty obvious this secondary and DE pairing was going to get us abused.  DTs and LBs then get stretched comical thin as you try to rely on them to make up for the issues

This is because we have been in cap hell for a while now  because of a lot of dead money from bad contracts under Marty Hurney. Nothing to see here, 2017 is  first real year we actually had Cap space under Ron Rivera and Gettleman

Not this poo again.

Please tell me how many years were the Panthers in cap hell SINCE THE CBA in 2011?

1 year.

That 1 year of cap hell seems to have lasted a decade for some fans. Even though the cap strapped year led to a 12-4 team winning the division and culminating in the beginning of the prosperity from the 2011 rebuild.

Let's keep blaming Hurney for all the money Gettleman has horded or spent on bad investments. The years when Gettleman screwed up by over paying several mediocre players or flushing it down the toilet does not count as a year of cap hell due to Hurney.

Some of you need to read the CBA to understand what actually happened in 2011.

2017 is the first year the Panthers are going to be able to spend money? Seriously? It took half a decade for Gettleman to sort out the salary cap? Do you know how inept that makes Gettleman appear to be if it actually took him half a decade to get things sorted out with the salary cap?

smh

They are talking about cash spending, not cap spending.  Two different things.  I hate articles like this because to the average fan they don't know the difference.  Honestly I don't think some of the media types do either.

Here is an example that might better explain the difference:

Player A signs a 5yr/$100m contract with a $50m dollar signing bonus.

Salary               Bonus               Cap hit     Cash Hit

Year 1:     1m                      10m                     11m             51m

Year 2      10m                    10m                     20m

Year 3      12m                    10m                     22m

Year 4      12m                    10m                     22m

Year 5:     15m                    10m                     25m

As you can see the cap hit for player A in the first year of his contract is $11m, but the cash spending is $51m.

Hurney handed out some big singing bonuses, some of which were associated with back loaded contracts.  Therefore cash spending was down for a few years.

In 2015 we actually spent the second most in cash:

2016 we spent second least:

If we would have reached a deal with Short or Norman we would have probably been in the middle to upper part of the league.

A lot of it has to do with the timing of signing bonuses.

Also this idea that the Panthers are cheap is a bit unfounded when it comes to the roster.  We have been very close to the cap since DG has been year.  This year we are carrying more then usual to next year but that is because of the Norman decision.  If we would have kept him on the tag we would be right at the cap.

The fact is that under the current CBA most teams are spending close to the same money.  If a team did decide to spend as little possible, it would be limited to 89% of the cap, over the assigned time period.  If that was the decision of the team I would think that would come from the owner.  A GM has no reason not to spend cap space, its not his money.

we gambled in the sense of letting key vets go and our young guys weren't ready. Cotchery, Harper, and Norman were crucial vets that we could have very easily resigned. We chose not to so we could save some money and it bit us in the ass when the young guys struggled. I wouldn't say it was obvious. We pull out the Denver, Tampa Bay, New Orleans games and we aren't having this discussion. We will bounce back though

What are some of these bad investments? Because the only big contracts that he has handed out have been to Cam, Luke, Olsen, Kalil, Davis. Coleman was given a fair contract and so was Oher. I honestly don't know what you can be thinking of.

The Panthers had plenty of cap room this year though?

Off the top of my head we overpaid Gano and Dickson.
