Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera constantly reminds his players not to pay attention to the outside noise.

But the outside noise surrounding Cam Newton being benched for the opening series of Sunday's game because the quarterback violated a team travel policy by not wearing a tie on the flight to Seattle was so loud on Wednesday that Rivera felt he had to address it.

So he did with a rather terse opening statement:

Apparently, doing what you're supposed to do doesn't seem to explain the situation, set of circumstances. So I'm going to address this one last time. OK? Again, I made a decision based on rules. Treat everybody the same. The reason you do it, especially when you're having a tough season, is because if you don't, chaos, it can consume your football team. The idea was to do the right thing, treat everybody the same. I've done it before where I've had to treat people the same, and that's all I've done. That's the end of it. Please, as a football team, we would like to move forward and start focusing on the San Diego Chargers. So I'm going to ask you not to start asking questions [about it]. I'm going to talk about the Chargers, I'm going to talk about our football team going forward. Thank you.

So Ron doesnt hesitate to throw the boulder into the lake, but now he wants to complain about the waves?

What a dumbass.

Ron is a VERY smart man, and easily one of the nicest people around. He seems lost right now as a coach and I hate to see it, but to publicly post "Ron Rivera is not very bright" is moronic

I agree that Ron seems like a great guy, but if he honestly didn't think he was starting a poo storm with that move, then that was pretty moronic.

For the record, I think he knew exactly what he was doing. He made a power play.

I'm not sure he was the one making the power play.

But every other guy on the team bus that evening had put on a tie and followed the rules. Hang the coach if you've got to, but Cam's put on a tie every game up until now.

Actually I don't think he had and it was starting to possibly bother other players. questioning Riveras coaching is one thing but questioning his integrity is another. We have a large number of Cam Newton fans who aren't really Panthers fans. That's fine but you have to understand they came with him and don't think of this as a team. They are the first to throw everyone under the buss and jump ship.

Fan since we drafted Peppers here.

Honestly, if it was Cam making the power play I can't even blame him. He has continually said and done all the right things in terms of putting the blame on himself and covering for his teammates and coaches. At some point, I can't blame him if he decides enough is enough. How long can he and we as a franchise endure incompetence at OC? I mean damn, I'd be willing to bet 75% of our timeouts this season have been so that we can avoid a delay of game penalty because we can't get a play call in on time. How long can he and we as a franchise endure the type of OL play - specifically at OT - that we've had for Cam's entire career? Byron Bell, Nate Chandler, Mike Remmers.  Jeeeeeeeeeezus.

We came really close last year, but damn if last year doesn't feel like a fluke right now. I don't even want to hear about three divisional championships in a row. The NFC South was white hot fuging trash in those years.

Ron, just do a Belichick and say "We're on to San Diego."

This. Don't be butthurt about it and act like a whiny bitch. The media will do what the media does and fish for a story. Want to move on, then move on. Don't lecture them about doing their job. Make it clear you're not answering that question. Going on a mini-rant gives them something to sink their teeth into.

But sometimes you have to use common sense when making rules.

Good:

And you're benched:

Embarrass the entire organization in the national spot light. No common sense on this decision imho.
