If we do get a new OC...

...I'd actually take Ken Whisenhunt (expected to be let go along with the entire chargers staff) over Norv Turner.

Heck, you might even be able to talk me into Mike McCoy.

Right now, I'm looking over the names on staffs that are expected to be let go and seeing what names I'd want  if positions should happen to become available.

Can you elaborate on why? What benefits would each of these coaches bring to the team? What are their styles? Not that I am completely ignorant to these men, but I have always viewed you as one of the greatest football minds on the huddle and I would appreciate your insight.

I wouldn't call myself that but appreciated.

Whisenhunt is an E-P guy so the adjustment would likely be minimal. I do, however, believe he'd dump the read option garbage and go to more of a pure pro system.

Most of his coaching teeth were cut with the Steelers, where they don't try that hard to adjust to the players. Instead, they prefer to acquire players that fit what they do.

Also like that he has head coaching experience, which might (might) be of help to our head coach when it comes to some of the skills he's lacking.

McCoy? If I recall correctly, most of his experience is in WCO, though in his time here we were running a Coryell and the Chargers have been running an E-P.  He's had a little bit of everything.

The thing I do like most about McCoy is that by all accounts, he's very smart. And obviously, he's adaptable since he's been able to work within various systems.

Mind you, I have nothing major against Turner. I just think there are better options.

If the Bills fire Ryan and don't retain Anthony Lynn, that's another place I'd look. Lynn is talked about as a brilliant play designer (something we're very much lacking right now.

This doesn't exactly make me overjoyed at the prospect considering that this is an issue that the team currently deals with despite Rivera's claims that otherwise would occur when he was hired.

Position coaches I'd take a look at if they're set free...

Bills OC Anthony Lynn (in a heartbeat if they don't retain him ; I'd even consider him a head coaching candidate)

Jaguars OC Nathaniel Hackett (as a quarterback coach)

Jaguars WR Coach Jerry Sullivan (if Proehl were promoted to OC).

Bills OL Coach Aaron Kromer (would have to clear up some previous off field questions but he's a very good OL coach)

Chargers RB Coach Ollie Wilson (longtime coach, well respected)

Chargers OL Coach Jeff Davidson (yeah, him; lousy OC but good OL coach; likely wouldn't come back here if Bill Rosinski's story about him and Smitty is true, though)

Bills Offensive Assistant Chris Palmer (well respected as a quarterback coach, but up there in years)

Chargers Assistant OL Coach Dave DeGuglielmo (disciple of Dante Scarnecchia, was made a patsy by Belichick)

Bills LB Coach Bobby April III (not necessarily for that position; his dad was a brilliant ST coach)

Jaguars OL Coach / Interim Head Coach Doug Marrone (he's a solid OL guy but probably has his eye on bigger things ; has been an OC)

Chargers DB Coach Chris Harris (as a replacement for our current safety coach, why not "Hitman")

Bills DB Coach Dennis Thurman (has been a DC before; would interest me as a safety coach here)

Bills Assistant DB Coach Ed Reed (because why not)

He wouldn't have personnel responsibilities here.

Point being he'd likely dump the read option.

I'd take out Matsko too.

Honestly, most of the coaches on the offensive side are at least to some degree replaceable.

Then what do you do with Oher, who we just gave a sizable deal? Eat the dead money, or hope he succeeds without Matsko (which is where all his pro success has come from)? Of course it's possible he retires or isn't even healthy by next season but I think it's more likely he won't and he'll be ready for next year. And obviously you don't want to keep a bad coach just because of one player on the line.

But I'm not so sure he's the problem on OL. The group has been pretty solid when completely healthy. Most of the struggles come from the inability to adjust the offensive system when something isn't working or pieces aren't healthy. A lot of the struggles in the Super Bowl on the OL had a lot to do with Stew being hurt, and when Stew was out this year the line was at it's worst. Same with the only regular season loss last year. Our offense can only have success in the run game when Stew is healthy because our sh*t offense is built entirely around Cam running the read option, and Stew is the only back on our roster who can run that. It's a pitiful philosophy and design by Shula and that's what hurts the OL and ultimately Cam the most, in my opinion.

When we replaced Henning, we kept the position coaches even though we went from Coryell to E-P.  I expect us to keep Matsko, Dorsey, and Proehl no matter what happens.  If Shula is gone, the only certainty is that we don't get a WCO guy, and despite what Rivera said about changing approaches, it will be someone who can take advantage of Cam's running ability.

Basically, we're gonna end up with more long developing plays.

Ricky Proehl is the only offensive coach I hope stays

At this point I think proehl also  needs evaluated especially since we've drafted 2 WR pretty early in the draft and they both still haven't done chit. No one  gets a pass for this pos offense this year.
